Stowing Winch Handles

Greetings,

My boat came with all Harken deck hardware, and only one 10" chrome winch handle for the five winches. Oh, there's a "spare" black one, aluminum or something, but I don't really like it, and I keep it in a lock as a backup. I currently keep the chrome one in a cockpit cubby. Kind of cliumsy to grab.

I just "score" two chrome handles for $85 on eBay. I would like to stow all three so they are ready and handy.

I am interested in what folks use for winch handle storage. Vinyl pockets screwed to bulkheads, or clamped to the binnacle, or, ...?

Thanks.

Incidentally, I wanted to "spruce up" the handles, as two are missing the caps on top of the ball-bearing black handles, and one has a non-functioning locking mechanism. A Harken rep sent me a fabulous document for the handles, and with the part numbers I was able to source the needed parts, all at a discount. Great doc. Great company.

Best price on parts was Maui Pro Sailing.

I have a pair of line bags/cockpit organizers affixed to the cabin top in the cockpit. I keep the winch handles in the stbd bag when sailing.

Can you grab a handle with one hand?

Vinyl pockets screwed into the cockpit seat lowers for me. Not the subject of this photo but you can see one in the background on the right.

The port jib sheet winch is just outboard of that on the cockpit combing. We have a handle for each jib sheet winch. We basically keep the working handle in the winch until we’re preparing to tack. The lazy handle stays in its pocket.

Just forward of the cockpit we have two winches, one for the main sheet and one for outhaul and in-haul. For that we have one grip-lock handle that basically lives in the main sheet winch.

I have several of these nets from Organized Obie in the cabin and the cockpit. Handy for just about everything, easy to remove and launder. Our winch handle always ends up in there. These are durable (I have used them on two different boats), but I have had to reinforce the one in the cockpit that gets the heaviest use. Self-adhesive snaps are great, aves having to drill to permanently install, but do need replacement every now and then.

Make sure you order the right size for the pedestal. 215DB7A0-6A42-4BF2-A2D0-C74CFB688EBD.png

Double sided glue Velcro. I have two available right by the winch when sailing. Holds heavy handles just fine for 20 years

I have 3 vinyl pockets, each with a chrome handle winch. One is mounted in the cockpit bridge deck (off to one side) and easily reachable for either cabin-top winch. The other 2 are mounted low in the cockpit on either side of the helm seat…about as far outboard as I could mount them, and easily grabbed for port or starboard jib sheet winch.

Here is the one at the bridge deck…

I find these locations pretty handy for me, particularly when single-handed.

It's really difficult to see the winch pocket. That beautiful woodwork is overpowering!

Thank you! So you’re saying this picture with the starboard pocket and winch beyond the table with fold-up leaves installed isn’t more helpful? ;)

I can’t take the credit for anything but the picture and some measuring and installing though. The woodwork was my dad’s project last summer.

The telescoping winch handle for the cabintop winches just stays locked in the mainsheet winch except when in use for the halyard winch.

The long handle genoa sheet winch stays in a vinyl holder clamped to the front the steering pedestal within easy reach of either genoa winch. It’s more than 25 years old and will need to be replaced soon as it’s developing a small split, so it‘s good to see other ideas here.

I also have a spare long handle winch on board in case the genoa winch ever goes for a swim.

I picked up 2 of mine at a nautical flea market. They needed a good scrubbing, but functional.

I've got the hard pedestal holder like Dave and added a Suncor socket mount to side, since it's all covered by pedestal cover they stay there.
