Hi Keith,
I had been using an Origo 3000 non pressurized alcohol stove for years. This stove has two burners which are the canister type. The problem is, that I only use one burner most of the time and alcohol has gotten so expensive, so last year I decided that I'm going to use my single burner Origo 1500 stove for now on. I think that this will work for me whereas I do most of my boating with Penny and very rarely have guests on board.
I've also decided to omit the two quarter birth mattresses that fit under the cockpit to gain more storage space for an extra 26 quart cooler and the extra gear I usually take along on my cruises.

When I changed my galley cabinet over, I discovered that my table would no longer clear my two burner stove when I swung it over the sink.
Just last year I discovered that the table will clear my single burner stove if I slide the stove to Starboard. My table will just miss my stove and swing over the sink and out of the way. I intend to slide the stove to Port when I want to cook on it. Here's some pics of how I'm going to set up my cabin this year. The last pic is my Origo two burner stove that will now stay at the house. I paid $5.00 for that single burner Origo stove in a junk shop years ago. They sell for almost $200. What a buy!
Joe

I use an origo 3000 on my O'day 27. Performs like a champ.
I think the Origo is a great stove myself. Alcohol is expensive in quarts. I've been buying it in gallon cans at Home Depot under the brand name S-L-X Denatured Alcohol. It's cheaper by the gallon.
I came up with an idea a couple of years ago of conserving alcohol each time I use my Origo boat stove. I used to forget to put the gasket back on the canister after the stove cooled down quite often, and a lot of alcohol can evaporate from the canister this way. So now, instead of letting the burners cool down, I use a damp cool rag to cool off the top of the canisters. Then I keep the lid propped up and put the gasket on the cooled off canister with a weighted metal object on it until the rest of the inside of the stove cools down. After the inside of the stove cools down, I remove the metal weight from the canister and close the stove. I'm not sure if this can have any adverse effect on the canister screen temperature-wise. It may or may not, I really don't know. It's something to keep in mind if you choose to adopt this alcohol conserving tip. This tip, along with a few of my recipes can be found on the Saltysailors.com web site.

I've used both the alcohol and butane. My 26 came with a one burner butane stove that works great. It heats up much quicker and better than my Origo did. It stores in the cabinet next to the ice box.

I have an Origo two burner. It works really well, but I'm thinking about swapping it out for a one burner butane since we only really use it to heat up a pot of water in the morning for coffee and oatmeal. I'd like to claim the room on that slide out platform as well.

We're not gourmets like Joe- if I could do the stuff he does with his stove, I'd probably stick with the two burner, but we're usually at the marina (where we grill) for dinner and on the water for breakfast.

We replaced our pressurized alcohol stove with a single burner Kenyon butane one. My only complaint with it, is that the grate has to big a hole in the center for our percolator we make coffee with. We need to watch closely if the boat rocks at all. Most times for coffee we use a Jetboil "pocket rocket" that my son used to use when he was in the scouts. That way we can make coffee out in the cockpit and watch the sun rise. Most of our cooking is done on the grill. We pre plan meals and prep work is done ahead, except for veggies. The skillet that comes with the nesting cookware set sold on this site fits perfectly on our grill, and for "stir fry" type meals we use a grilling basket that you can get at most anywhere with a nice display of grilling supplies.

Here is the "Pocket rocket" when we were out at Block Island last summer. One of the local "bums" was waiting for handouts.

Here is one of the sunrises we saw last summer. This is sunrise over Watch Hill, RI, from our anchorage behind Napatree Point.

Hey Rick,
The nerve of that guy,-- standing on your outboard. :)

Beautiful pics!

Butane stoves are pretty good guys. I have a fascination with stoves of all kinds. I have about four or five of them at the house including a pocket pressurized alcohol stove that I made out of an Aluminum water bottle a few weeks ago. I need to keep this ole' guy's mind preoccupied until the boating season gets here. :D

Rick,

Not to steal the tread but... is that an Ida rudder? Do you prefer it to the O'day rudder?

TIA,

John

I use a Coleman two burner camp stove for my Oday 23. The propane cylinders are available at just about any supermarket or hardware store.

Yes, it is an Idasailor. We really like it for fact that it kicks up when we are anchored, or even in a slip, and it opens up the cockpit since the tiller can be put up out of the way. The old rudder had to be lashed in place, and it was also very noisy at night, especially if anchored in a not so calm area. As far as sailing goes, it is satisfactory. It is not the "barn door" the original one was, so it does seem to stall out a little quicker when beating, or when the sails are a little out of balance, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, as heal angle doesn't get quite so steep. When it gets to the point it stalls more than I like, it is time to reef anyway. Reefing cures the stall problem.

Thanks for the info on the Ida rudder. I have an almost new O'day rudder, it was replaced by the previous owner. I built a wing rudder for a friend of mine, he had an O'day 25. It worked well, I'm thinking of doing the same on this boat when I get the time.

Very cool. It looks like the setup of the pop top is superior to the newer model for cooking with a much better work area. You're standing there cooking away like Wolfgang Puck while I'm hunched over, balancing stuff and dumping ingredients all over the place.

Sorry, that's not me. That's my daughter. She was 6 at the time. I sit at the galley table and cook while sitting down.

What a cute kid! I meant I thought you could stand up under the pop top and cook. Still I like the layout.

I can stand under the pop-top, but the stove is just above my knees.

I've always loved the galley set up on these boats. The only thing I don't have on board is a waffle iron and I'm going to keep my eye out for one.
I have twin granddaughters who love to sail. My three grandsons could take it or leave it. I hope to get them out on the water this year and sail around the Battleship Cove area of Fall River Ma. Hopefully with that new higher drawbridge in operation I won't need to have them open the old drawbridge again.

I purchased a two-burner propane stove for my 23 ft. Any advice on a good, and safe, location to use it?
Nice looking woodwork, Trinka. Sure adds more space. Are the third and fourth pictures the space under the companionway? What kind of wood did you use?

Yes. that is the area under the cockpit seats. The wood is the same Teak plywood that came with the boat. I just removed it all and stained it a dark red Mahogany color, added spar polyurethane, and reinstalled it.
I did however build those hatch covers for the compartments on the quarter and V births though.

As for the stove location, I would put it in the same place that ruidh has his. I love the interior of the 23s.
