Steve, I had a throttle cable break on my Merriman pedestal and Roger Mummah said you were knowledgeable in fixing it. Do you have a manual or know where I could get one? The cable snapped right at the throttle lever on the binicle. It has also come undone at the engine side. The RPM's are stuck at about 2000. I need any advice you can give me on how to repair this. Thanks, Joe Mullee

Joe: Roger sometimes gets carried away. I have not done this repair. He has probably confused my fuel shut off cable with the throttle. You need to contact Greg Emerson at Hunter and get the cable length. There are a few different mfg that make quality cables. I think Morse and Teleflex are some of the ones that come to mind. You want to be sure that you get one that can make short radius bends. If you are going to change out the throttle, you should also do the shifter cable too. This will not be something that you want to do again very soon. You are probably aware that there is a screw on the pedestal (about half way up the column) that holds the cable housing. This must be loosened to release the cable housing. This is probably going to one of the more difficult parts of the job. Then you will need to drop the pan that covers the steering cables and pulleys. While you are in there be sure to inspect the play in the steering and adjust it too. I think that there is a bracket on the engine that holds the cable housing for the throttle. I do not know what holds the housing on the shift linkage. When you replace the shifter cable, be sure that you put some locktite on the tranmission end of the cable to prevent the linkage nut from backing off (this happened to me twice, wow was that exciting).

Sounds like fun

Guess this one is going to take awhile. Thanks for your help. JM

It's Most Likely Tele-Flex

That is what was on my Hunter 34. Went to the marine store and matched it up.

David, Have you done this??

I'd like to go over this before I attempt to do it myself. If you've done this repair could I call or email you before starting on my own? Thanks, Joe mullee
