Just a question on a 1986 O Day 28.

When I am sailing or motoring and get over 4 knots the stern wake of my boat has the Exhaust Port of the engine submerged under 4 inches of water. Have other owners experienced this situation? I had shifted weight of the crew on board forward and it did not make a difference. Is this caused by the hull design of the boat? Does this pause any problem with back pressure on the exhaust port while it's submerged? Any speed below 4 knots leaves the exhaust port exposed. Any thoughts???

Hey,

I don't think it matters. On my boat, if I'm motoring over 5 kts the same things happens. I have motored for a LONG time like that (once for about 8 hours) and all was well.

Make sure that the area where the exhaust hose passes through the transom is sealed. A few years ago I always had water in the bilge after motoring. I thought it was the stuffing box, but water was leaking into the boat because the exhaust flange wasn't sealed. Some caulking fixed the problem and the bilge was dry the rest of the year (except when it rained, but I fixed that problem this year :) ).

I wouldn't worry about that as my O28 has similar characteristics and it's been fine for the past 8 years. With that said, I can understand your stern dipping while motoring, but why would this happen when sailing? Have you checked the allignment of your mast, forestay and backstay? Does this happen whenever sailing or only at a specific point of sail?

I noticed this while sailing the first time this past weekend. I was on a Beam Reach when it was noticed. I will be checking it on other points of sail. The boat sails well and is very comfortable at the wheel. I believe my rigging is tuned properly but I am always open to suggestions which I would give a try if they made sense to me.

Even on the 37CC w/ empty water tanks (-1200lbs) the exhaust dips at anything over 5knts or so under power- We never had a problem before I repowered last year, but we setup a 2' camel hump above water level between the wet muffler and outlet on the transom to help w/ any following waves-

After 20 years of cleaning the carbon off the transom, I moved the exhaust outlet up and to the port side. No more motoring with the exhaust in the water. Fairly easy change on a 34,

An option to moving the exhaust outlet is the prior owner of my boat install a 90 degree hose elbow and clamped it to the exhaust outlet pipe tha protrudes a bit from the stern. It directs the exhaust and water out about foot from the transom. Very easy and cheap.
