Stepping the mast on a 30 Tall can be exciting without the use of a crane. But as the crane service in this area charges by the mile, setup charge, and hourly rates, it isn't an option.OPTIONS AVAILABLEWe use two telephone poles approx. 11 ft. apart. The local utility company donated the poles and installed for us.Ropes are pulled on and I am always hoping the big boys show up that day to help. A basket device was designed to hook under the spreader bars. When all the rigging is installed up you go. NOT a one person operation. Remember you are in the parking lot 10-11 feet off the groung on a trailer. You must have help, help that is familar with the boat and rigging. Two years ago the owner of a 36 Catalina installed a small crane of sorts on our guest dock, which is also used as a storm break. The dock is steel plated and steel posts. The boat has to be directly under the small crane. The mast , which is laying on the forward and aft rails, supported, top of the mast facing aft, is raised straight up. AGAIN you must have people familar with the boat surrounding you. Oh! install a small block on the port side of the boat from the crude crane and use wench on port side to raise. This takes about 2 hours if all goes well and the most fun is installing the wiring to mast. I do not like either situations, too many variables of a safey nature. Another option using a special made plate that mounts under the mast, a t-frame that attaches to stern and a small a-frame device has also been also used.
