Dear Friends, I have a Catalina 27 that I bought July of this year. yesterday just as a test I tried to start the engine on the three different choices. the previous owner told me he uses ALL and I have been doing that with no problem. yesterday, I tried number one, she started right up. Started number 2, cranked but wouldn't start. kicked it over to ALL and no problem. Funny, both one and two are brand new batteries. Does anyone have any thoughts why number two (being actually newer and larger than number one) wouldn't be able to start the engine? Could it actually be a wiring issue? any thoughts will be helpful. PS when the boat was delivered to me in july the capt mentioned this issue to me and that was with the older battery. once i took possesion i simply bought two new batteries.

...swop the 2 batteries if that's possible. If the engine starts with the #2 battery in the #1 position then it's obviously not the battery. I'd also try starting the engine with the #1 battery in the #2 position. Depending on what results you get determines what your next step is.

Find out where your alternator output

goes. If it goes to the 1-2-B switch, you have to start on B or one of your battery banks will NOT get charged. Unless you have a combiner or echo charge. You should also consider moving the alternator output to your house bank and getting an echo charger for the start bank or using switches to parallel the banks during charging.

batteries

I have a 1 year old Catalina 28, and this may or may not be pertinent. I also have two batteries. Either one can start the engine no problem. In the manual for the boat they state that battery #1 is the house battery and that #2 is the starting battery (I think thats the term). I have checked both batteries, and they are different types of batteries. #2 is a deep cycle battery. I read somewhere that the deep cycle battery is designed for starting an engine, and the other battery is better at running things like lights etc. So, I use #2 for starting the engine. So, even if your batteries are brand new, make sure that you have the right types of batteries. Rob
