Not really marine diesel related, but I tried to start my JD tractor today…been sitting in the shed for the winter. Gas engine, not diesel.
Battery was. Pretty weak, so put it on a charger overnight. cranked it today…but no joy. Checked for spark, and got plenty. Still would not start. Checked fuel. Added fresh gas to the tank…still no go.
Finally pulled the fuel filter off, and replaced with a new one. Saw fuel pulling through the filter right away, so I knew the fuel pump was working…
…and then bingo…she started.
I am guessing the fuel filter was plugged up.
The moral of the story is, for a
- gas engine…fuel, air and spark are needed.
- Diesel engine…fuel, air, compression needed.
You shouldn’t really need starting fluid (but I get that it may help kick the engine to start).
