Dave is right. You need to find that spot for your boat. Trying to run a displacement boat beyond it's hull speed is just wasting fuel.

I run my 2GM20 F in my O’Day 322 at about 3000-3200 rpms. Not WOT, but enough to push the boat at about 6-6.5 knots depending on wind and wave state.

If I run mine at WOT, I get a lot of unburned fuel in my exhaust water output, and eventually the engine overheats. Not sure of the cause yet.

I got my son out there today to squirm and wiggle his way down to take the starter off so we could go get it diagnosed. After a while I heard him laugh then he called, "found the problem!" and resurfaced with two nuts in hand. Turns out it had unbolted itself! He dived back in and reinstalled the bolts and it works fine now.
I surmise that it was probably serviced at some point in the past and when bolted back on they were left loose enough to eventually vibrate their way back out again.

@Justin_NSA did the engine backfire when starting??? I don’t remember how many I broke that way on my TR3 (another tractor engine).

No Les. I actually thought I had a bad battery. It wouldn't turn over. I had already called in for a tow back to the slips when I tried it one last time. It cranked the engine over before failing completely.

@Justin_NSA I believe @LeslieTroyer may own the on water record for a Catalina 36 starter motor change... I believe it came in at 29 minutes 42 seconds. But we are calling it 30 minutes. He missed some beautiful sailing waters while he was on his side at the bottom of the companionway doing the install.

LOL! With the right tools on hand, I might be able to match that for a Hunter. Mine is really easy to get to

Oh Boy. A challenge race. @LeslieTroyer vs @Justin_NSA this could be a great event.

Just to make it fair. We all could gather at my boat. My boat could serve as the neutral event site and I could let you guys show your talents. We could film the event and put it up here on SBO.

This sounds like a cool thing. Are your tools ready?

Sounded like a reasonable idea sitting here sipping my cup of coffee.
