The starter on my Universal M-18 in my C-27 has burned up. The cost for a new one is a bit of a shock, $700. I seem to recall being told that the M-18 is a Kubota tractor engine. Starters for these run aboout $200. Does anyone know any way to cross reference with Kubota parts?

Can you find a local Kubota dealer?

John I don't know where Shell Point is, and we have an M25. I know I can find the M25 Kubota crossover number from our C34 website, but never heard anyone ask for an M18. The related link goes to Kubota Equivalent on our message board. One post says it's marked on the side of the engine. Give that a try. Try this link, too. If this doesn't work, go back to the related link, and use the SEARCH feature at the top, type in equivalent, and scroll down to Kubota injector numbers. Lots of good tractor sources there. http://www.c34.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=978&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=equivalent If you can find a local Kubota dealer, take your old one off and bring it in. My difficulty is that the Universal dealer is right down the street and they don't sell a lot of tractors in San Francisco anymore. ;D You're right about the outrageous prices for "marine" versions of exactly the same thing. Maybe Cheaper To Rebuild

You might look into rebuilding versus replacing with new. I know Lewco, in Newport Beach, Ca rebuilds marine alternators and starters. Might be worth a try locally or give Lewco a call.

Starter Story: To Be Continued

Thanks for you alls imput. I found a starter that will fit a Kubota D600 and D640. I am not sure it will fit on the M-18, but the picture looks identical to the one I took off. The cost was about $100 so I think it is worth gambling the return shipping costs. If I find out the Kubota number for the M-18 I will pass in on. The link above provided by Stu gives the Kubota engine block numbers for the M-25, M-25XP, M-30, M4-30 and the M-35.

Unversal Engines/Starters

Below is a link to some background information on Universal engines. It has all the Kubota block numbers for Unviversal engines. The M-18 uses a Kubota Z-600 block and was used on the Kubota B4200 tractor. The starter for a M-18 costs $700, the starter for the equivalent Kubota cost me $99 plus shipping, plus a few hours searching the web. Now to spend the widfall!
