New starter

Check for equivalents with your local Kubota tractor or Kubota engine dealer. Kubota manufactured some engines for Universal. Check the Tech-Talk manual. The Universal 5411 is a Kubota Z500. Yours MAY be the Kubota Z600 or Z 1-600.

So as not to overlook the obvious....

is the battery okay? I'm no mechanic, but that tic, tic, tic sound could be the same one that I've heard in cars when the battery was too low to turn the engine over. Just a thought. Brad

STARTER PROBLEM!

test the ground...one way to test is to run a jumper cable directly from battery negative to engine block. we have overhauled our starter three times and never more than $85 ! we have a /84 #5411 as well ... please let us all know the outcome...good luck

Sounds Electrical

Sounds like not enough juice get to the starter. See my post "Starting a M-25". This is have I hear when I keep the glowplug button depressed and push the start button. As soon as I release the glowplug button, it cranks like nothing.

Yep, it could be the batteries

I agree with the electrical power concensus. I had the same problems, and I installed some new gel cell batteries and have had no trouble since. Prior to that I thought it was the starter because I could jump start the starter with a screwdriver. I sent a mechanic down to pull the starter out for a rebuild and he came back and said it was the batteries. (An honest mechanic). Good luck.
