What would be a ballpark price for replacing the standing rigging on my 78 Catalina 27? The mast is currently up so I will need to have it lowered for the project. I upgraded the original eye-bolts to Catalina Direct's U-bolts last year and although the shroud, forestay and backstay wires 'seem' to be in good condition (e.g. not frayed) I would have more piece of mind with new. -Matt

Last year I had my yard pull the mast on my 27 so I could carefully inspect everything aloft. Although I found no specific problems, I felt it was prudent to replace everything due to age. Better safe than sorry. I spent $2,200 for everything: new forestay, backstay, four lower shrouds, two upper shrouds, topping lift, new antenna and cable, new light fixtures and wiring, new halyards, etc. I let the yard do the work over the winter. Although expensive, everything aloft is brand new and should remain trouble free for years. Randy

You're in an area where you should be able to find many rigging supply businesses. If you just replace the wires, it will be less than 700 bucks. I replaced mine 4 years ago. 4 5/32 lowers at about $50 apiece, 2 3/16 cap shrouds and 2 3/16 stays for about $80 apiece. All come with swaged marine eyes and threaded studs. You can measure yourself or get the data from catalina27.org. Or you can take the rigging off a few pieces at a time and have the shop duplicate them. Find a marine directory for your area and look up the rigging supply places, then call with your basic specs and have them give you a quote. Call to a many shops as possible to find the best deal. You can change the rigging without pulling the mast, as long as you don't mind going up the stick.
