Recent heavy snows here have caused my starboard aft stanchion to bend. The base has buckled, allowing a 3/8" gap between the middle of the base and the deck. I called Rudy at D&R Marine, but they don't have any stanchions to fit a 1976 O25. (These have the bails welded onto the base & stanchion tube) They suggested Tops in Quality in Michigan. Has anyone bought stanchions from these guys? I'm hoping to find something identical (or very close) to the original. Could a local machine shop straighten out the base of the one I have, or would metal fatigue mean I'll soon be starting all over? I surely want to fix this before June launch, and hoping to get the stanchion re-bedded quickly to avoid a leak & subsequent deck core rot... Thanks! Sean

Sean, the base plate is a Schaefer base.

I bought my boat with a broken stanchion. I replaced it with the Base and post. NOT the gate post.It has an added brace in the picture. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producte/10001/-1/10001/262098/0/0/stanchions/All_2/mode+matchallpartial/0/0 I hope the link pops up. It is Model # 36-01 and West Marines # 367005. Hope this helps! r.w.landau Top link didn't work the bottom one did...

Shaeffer Stanchion is Different!

I had a stanchion bend last year on my '78 O'Day 25. I bought the Shaeffer 36-01, and after bedding and mounting the thing, I find out that the angle is different than the original, so the stanchion still looked bent. After some calls to Shaeffer, they told me those bases were custom made for O'Day, and that there are no new ones left. I straightened my old base out in a vise. It's as good as new now.

The 36-01 is the only stanchion that will fit

the old bolt pattern. I have never noticed that it is different from the others except for the post is an individual piece. I believe that the 36-01 is stronger that the originals. I have my furler cleat attached to it. r.w.landau

Schaeffer 36-01

It may have the smae bolt pattern, but if you replace only one base it will not look the same on both sides and the boat will look funny. The original base has the stanchion angled out slightly (keeps the lifeline off the shroud), and the 36-01 will have it straight up and down. If you replace both sides, at least it will match.
