Whats with my autopilot? When I was sailing yesterday the clutch on my ST4000 plus would disengage about every 4-5 minutes. It is about 3 1/2 years old. Tom s/v Miss Jenna

Tom: Cannot answer your question, but, I have had good luck submitting questions to Raymarine at their website www.raymarine.com They usually reply within a couple of days with some specific info. Jeff

Same problem

Have to watch it closely. Declutches when the weather helm gets heavy.

I went to Raymarine's web site & posted the problem. They replied promptly, but they confused the clutch tension knob with the engage/disengage lever. I'm not sure, but I believe there's a small allen nut that secures the lever to the steering assembly. Maybe tightening this a 1/2 turn or so will help. Has anyone tried that with any success? Same Problem

The response I got from Raymarine was that the gear and belt needed to be replaced by sending to an authorized service center. It may be that the pins get sheared when turning the wheel while the autopilot is engaged. However I did tighten the allen screw on the lever as suggested by Al and that has worked so far.

Da fix

Your tentioner wheel is probably dirty. Take the drive assembly off the steering wheel. There are several rubber wheels that run in a groove that holds the two halves together. With a flat tip screwdriver, gently pry up on one side over a wheel. Once one wheel is out, the whole thing comes apart in two halves. Find the flat cover plate that holds the tentioner in. Remove the phillips head screws and the plate. Clean the roller and drive gear. If the tentioner wheel has any binding, lube the center shaft with a tiny bit of white lube grease, but don't get any on the outside of the wheel or the drive gear. Re-assemble and problem should go away.

none

take the two sections of the drive unit apart by placing a screwdriver in the gap between them. Remove the drive belt and clean the excentric pulley. Then clean the drive wheels and lubricate them all with a cleaner like WD40

remove the cover on the drive belt by inserting a screwdriver in the slot between the two sections attached to the wheel. Do it is several spots. It will snap apart and then snap back together when you are finished. Remove the 4 phillips screws and remove the plate and belt. clean the excentric wheel and lubricate with something similar to WD 40 Clean off the idler wheels and reassemble.
