Spreader light

Whilst up the mast to check the wooden spreaders on my C-30, I checked the tiny halogen bulb in the relfector housing at the bottom of the light fixture. That's the two-part fixture that houses both the spreader light and the steaming light. Since the spreader light had quit functioning, I removed the bulb so as to find a replacement. Unfortunately, I didn't quite get it all: a part of the base of the tiny glass bulb broke off in the housing. Has anyone replaced that bulb? - how is it installed - a push fit, or twist, or what? Does the reflector come off so you can get at the base of the bulb? Any experience that anyone can share would be gratefully received.

light bulb

My spreader light bulb has the pins that just push in. When I tried to pull my bulb out, the pins broke off in the fixture(probably been in there for 10 years). I tried to get 'em out, but I got pissed off and just bought a new fixture. Maybe you're more patient than me and can get the pieces out.

Broken too!

Seems like we all have been up the mast. My spreader light (deck light) also quit working. I headed up the mast and broke the bulb (just like you). I pulled out the reflector and noticed that the assembly was corroded together. So down the mast and to the store I went. I drilled out the pop-rivets and installed a new steaming light and spreader light assembly. I think about $50 at West Marine. I used aluminum rivets to install. This should stop some corrosion! Make sure you grommet the hole for the wiring and make sure you have enough wire to keep the strain off. Should last another 10 years and the bulb is sealed on this one. Arrgghh...

Do you use the spreader light?

Can't say I have found a use for my spreader light. Unless you like practical jokes & like to ruin the captains night vision. I removed the bulb & now am curious. What do you use it for?

Re: What do I use it for?

I recall time sharing a C-30 a couple of years ago and thought it was great to have light on the deck when docking or anchoring at night. So, I hope to get the light working on my own boat now. However, I'll try not to obsess about it - there are other matters more pressing! Thanks to all of you for the information on the spreader light.

Use it during raft-ups

We use ours all the time at large raftups. It makes crossing from one boat to another at night mich safer (remember that at a raftup it is considered rude to go across peoples cockpits, always go over the bow).

Where the heck is the switch?

Just bought my 30. Got the same spreader light. Can't find the switch for it. Got the steaming light, but nothing is labeled for the spreader light. I'm sure I'll feel like an idiot when you tell me

switch

What year is your boat? My '85 has the spreader light switch right above my steaming light switch.

Foredeck Light?

It might be called a foredeck light, because that's what it's illuminating. Spreader lights usually hang down from the spreaders and light up port and starboard. The foredeck light can be used when some moron drags back on you in the middle of the night!!!

Switch...

On my 1981 C-30 the spreader lights are on the same switch as my steaming light. Thats why I disconnected it. It blinds me when I drive (under power) at night. I'd bet they changed that since. or a previous owner miswired it before I had the boat. If I was smart I guess I should put the light on another switch & make use of the provision...

Where is the switch?

Since I started this thing, my C-30 is an '83, and the switch is just above the steaming light switch. Yours may be different, depending on the year.
