I am looking to purchase my first boat, a 1974 27 Cat. The deck is a little soft. Is this a common problem? I noticed the forward deck fittings have quite a supply of silicon on and around them. This makes me wonder if water between laminations is a problem, past or present. The boat otherwise in is respectable shape for its age.

Spongy decks a problem....

I would say that yes, spongy decks are/can be a major problem. This means that moisture has invaded the sandwich composite (usually a glass/ply/glass matrix) and as such, the spongyness felt = no longer strong!. If this is in a location where structural integrity is key, then be prepared for a big repair. If its in an area thats not structural, it could still be a problem if not fixed. Repair means removing failed core and relaminating to fix- a hard job to do!! If your looking at a boat like this to purchase, I suggest, NEXT!......... Some spongyness in C27 decks were from poor lamination schedules at the factory. These type of voids (if small) can be repaired easily by drilling holes into the void and injecting epoxy to fill the void and eliminate any air pockets where moisture can be trapped.

spongy decks

Anytime you find silicone beading around a fitting on a deck, coachroof etc., it is an indication of trying to stop a leak rather than properly bedding the fitting. I have known lots of people purchasing a "good buy" that has turned into a terrible can of worms. They would have been much better off to have saved a few more bucks and bought a boat with fewer problems. Boats being boats, they are neve immune to problems, however why buy one when you "KNOW" it has a major one? Terry

Jmalt is right on the money

If the spongy area is small (less than 6-8" in diameter), you're looking at a nasty, nasty job of fixing it. If the area around the cleats isn't spongy yet, you may get lucky there. You can take 'em off, let 'em dry & bed them properly to avoid any future problems (come back when you do that for more details). Unless you're getting this boat for next to free and are willing to do or hire out a major repair job, run away! LaDonna
