I have an older analog knot meter. Wondering if the thru hulls are all about the same size? It isn't working reliably and I would like to replace it with a ST 40. Is it correct the ST 40 thru hull can be pulled out to put the boat on the trailer? Later

not all the same

Most modern impellers can be removed and replaced with a plug or cap. I remove mine when leaving the boat for long periods and in some waters you have to remove it quite often to clean. The ST40 falls into this category.

Speed Impeller Removal for Trailer

Removing the speed impeller before putting a boat on a trailer . . . interesting thought! I am having my H28 hauled and transported by tractor-trailer about 60 miles. Should I be removing the speed impeller before I get hauled? Are there other tasks I should complete before I get have the boat transported overland by truck?

Thru hulls

Hi Ed - Rick is right that there are several different sizes of thru-hulls, so you can't expect to switch makes of instruments and simply plug in the new unit. You might be able to have your older analog knot meter repaired; try calling The Offshore Store at 206-632-3025. You can send in your unit for testing. Just a suggestion. Trevor

Pull it - if you can plug it!

I have Datamarine for speed log and depth. When I bought my boat, I noticed that the paddlewheel was stuck with bottom paint and the depth transducer was simply painted over also. During checkout, the depth worked, but obviously the speed didn't. When the boat was delivered to our lake, the depth worked for about 10 minutes ... then went blank. Also, the paddlewheel fell out in my hands when I tried to work it loose. Oh well ... time to open the wallet. The paddlewheel had a broken paddle, which I attribute to being caught on the sling or broken in transport. I don't know if the paint over the depth transducer affects anything but I bet the sling could have damaged that as well. Anyway, wanting to take no chances after spending a couple bills for new transducers (they work great and were easy to install), I pulled the 2 new ones and used a plug (supplied by Datamarine) and the old transducer before putting the boat on hard for the winter. It took less than 5 minutes and why throw money away? *!
