Raye,

You should be able to get at it from inside the cabin as long as you have a spare plug to put in when you pull out the plug with the speed wheel. Should be under your floorboards...

Go up forward and lift the cabin sole. You'll find your speed impeller and depth sounder transducer there. If you're lucky there might also be a spare plug there. Remove the speed impeller, stick the plug in. Move quickly so you don't sink the boat. Clean impeller with a toothbrush. Replace.

Check to see if any of the documents from the PO refer to the transducers. I learned a lot (...our first ever boat) from casually reviewing the manuals (real life RTFM!). Another big help was to have a friend demonstrate the cleaning process for us on his boat, so we were a lot less terrified of sinking ours! The speed transducer will be obviously different when viewed from above inside the boat... It's the one with the removable cap that is designed to be taken apart.

Thanks, found it-looks like it kinda has threads on it which means probably un-screwing it out. scares the daylights out of me, how fast can I "un-screw this thing and not sink the boat in the process, ? The problem I have is the indicator flashes on and off which is probably a wire connection so I will check on that first. taking the thing out of the bottom can wait until haul out or when I have a experienced person helping. good sailing!

You don't unscrew it. There should be a pin with a ring (securing the pin). If it doesn't have the pin - you're probably looking at the depth sensor. That one doesn't get pulled.

As I posted on the same subject it really was easy.
Couple Tips:
- I used a small nylon wire tie to slide around the paddle wheel to dislodge the critters and junk
- At least on my boat you can tell the speed transducer from the depth transducer as the speed has an orientation direction arrow molded in the top to make sure it goes in in the correct direction

Good luck....
