South Coast S22 questions

I just inherited one that is going to need some TLC to get back on the water. Does anyone here have any experience with South Coast S22's? What are their capabilities? What is this boat too small to do?

I am also a big DIY mod type guy. Does anyone have any ideas or ways to sweeten one up? Anything very affordable that I should do to it while I am working on it anyways?

I was also thinking about posting the resurrection process of "The Blue Pearl". Is that a thread yall would be interested in following?

The V-222 was my previous project boat. Great little day-sailor or occasional weekender. Bought it for $1000 and put about that much into it. Sold it for $3500. Not a great business investment but well worth it for me.

I refitted a South Coast 22 back in the 80's, it was a Hurricane Alicia wreck I got for $500. I stuffed flotation foam under the v-berth and under the cockpit. I didn't have a lot of faith in the repairs I made to the cracks in the bottom. I would do something about the leading and trailing edges of the iron centerboard. I saw an article on some website about adding wood fairings and glassing over them.

I'm also a former Mac 222 owner and restorer... loved that boat. On your other thread you asked about what it is too small to do... see the PDF attached about a great adventure I had in a boat about your size.

Bill thats awesome that you had one. I havent found anyone else thats had one. How did you like it? What is wrong with the centerboard? What would adding fairings on it do?

I had a buddy with one just like Bill's .. I had a Spirit 23 at that time.. we sailed all over Lake Pontchartrain and out to the Mississippi Gulf Islands on multi day trips.. She was a fine sailing boat with a comfortable cockpit. They were built in Shreveport ..

The centerboard on my boat was a flat slab of iron, a little thicker at the bottom. It has no resemblance of any kind to a foil that will help the boat point. I thought it was a fast little sailboat out there by myself on Burnett Bay. Then a buddy bought a Venture 21 and put it on the bay, and I was left in his wake. I think I saw the article in a West Epoxy magazine or web site.
I'll try to find more old photos for you.

Ok thanks Bill. If it is solid metal, couldnt it just be ground to a more sharp edge as opposed to having to recover it?

Kloudie: Nice to see someone from the SE on here, much less a neighbor. I live in East Denham Springs. How did you make out in the flood, I dont think Mandeville really got anything did it? What islands in the Gulf were you taking the trailer sailers out to? I was going to try and keep a slip or put in at the Tchefuncte river, and boat in and out of Maurepas, but if that baby can handle the gulf, then I will look more on Ponchetrain as well! How much sailing did yall do in the gulf?

It would be a lot of hours of hot, dirty grinding. It's definitely something that can wait. Get things done enough to get it out on the water and use it, then see what other projects would be fun to tackle or make the boat better for the way you use it.

Bill;
Curious if you had to but a wedge of sorts on the outboard motor bracket due to the sever angle on you Southcoast 22. I use to own one many years ago purchased then from a dealer in Greensboro, NC. Great job on the restoration. I saw a used one painted black and orange inside the cabin with candle holders and walked away.

Thanks Dave, look at the photo of the boat on a trailer in a driveway a few posts back in this thread. Zoom in on the motor bracket, you can see angle adjustment holes on the bracket. It was an adjustable bracket you used to be able to buy in the 80's. I haven't seen it available in a long time.

YOu and I are on the same wave length. I too recall that but for some reason no longer available. On some transoms as a dealer, I made those style wedges.

Did you come up with any ways to make it a little quicker?

If you're going to work on the swing keel, and it's cast iron, I recommend getting as close to bare metal as you can, 2 coats Ospho Phosporic Acid, then 2 coats of marine Coal Tar Epoxy (it's what they use on nav buoys) then fill and fair, then 2 coats Ospho and more CTE in case your fairing burns through any coating. You could probably fair the leading and trailing edge and then a layer or two of glass, but your hull slot will dictate how much of that you can do. I've seen centerboard slots on small boats with a steel plate centerboard that has maybe 1/16" clearance on both sides. Skinny.

The last time I worked on a keel, I found this engine hoist on craigs list... these suckers are heavy so get some advice on how to move them about before you dive in. The keel in these pics is 1200lb... yours is probably in the 600lb range... still very heavy.

Oh yeah... I also sold the engine hoist on craigs list for $25 more than I paid for it when I was done...:)

The number I seem to remember for the keel on an SC22 was 400 lbs. Best way to make it quicker, without spending a lot of money for new sails, is to keep it light, especially in the ends. Mine had a 6 HP mercury from the 60's or 70's that seemed like the size and weight of a modern 35 HP. And I added a 6 gallon gas tank, with the bracket, that was probably 200 lbs. or more hanging off and near the stern, way too much for that boat. I added a tiller extension so the helmsman didn't need to be in the stern and could hike out a little like a dinghy.

My first sailboat SC 22 ,my niece found it in Clearwater, free with double axel trailer. Only problem, the front of the keel pocket, 3' ft. broken out. Started rebuild then found another SC22 in Tallahassee for $500 with new rigging, bought it. The keel was stuck in the up position due to rust and barnacles. Got it down, and refinished it using a 6" grinder. Was a wonderful boat, and the wife called it the little tug. At that time there was a yahoo forum for the South Coast. I will look on my old computer and see what files I can find. They are very similar to the Caterina 22 and I often looked there for upgrades.
