I can't answer your question but I can suggest an alternative...

...attach a pealess whistle to your PFD - kill two birds (SSD noise and SOS noise) with one stone.

I prefer the pressurized air horn. the one I have is rechargeable and comes with a small bycycle pump for that purpose. As often as we use it we generally test it once per outing and recharge as needed

My favorite is a horn that uses a piece of cellophane, searching for it I can only find suppliers in the UK, it's loud, easy to blow, deep and makes you sound much bigger:dance:

If you have outside speakers for your stereo, there are programed horns that blow pretty loud. You can replay them so they automatically repeat.

Sound Producing Devices

The navigation rules require sound signals to be made under certain circumstances. Meeting, crossing and overtaking situations described in the Navigation Rules section are examples of when sound signals are required. Recreational vessels are also required to sound for signals during periods of reduced visibility. Therefore, you must have some means of making and efficient sound signal. Although regulations do not specifically require vessels less than 12 meters to carry a whistle, horn or bell.
Vessels 12 meters or more in length are required to carry on board a power whistle or power horn and a bell.

I don't think you're referencing Transport Canada regulations. I believe the poster sails out of Vancouver, BC. Which means this applies, no?

Pleasure craft 12 m (39’4”) or greater in length must have a fitted whistle. Check the Collision Regulations for the technical criteria the whistle must meet.

Sound-signalling devices

Pleasure craft less than 12 m (39’4”) in length need a sound-signalling device if they are not fitted with a sound-signalling appliance. The sound-signalling device can be a pealess whistle, compressed gas horn or an electric horn.

i have one that the pump is actually attached to the horn so you pump it and it blows loudly, it was bought at Canadian tire

"Witches Hat", eh? Yup, that's what I'm looking for, I guess (the link goes to another "party horn"). And the requirement for possibly blowing it often is the exact reason why I like them - they NEVER run out of pressure! I don't like the pump-up kind because you may need it in a hurry and that's exactly when it won't have any pressure. I have had one and it never lost its pressure, but you never know...

I donno about those "party horns". The one I'm talking about would make everyone's ears ring for an hr if it was blown indoors. You could probably do permanent hearing damage to someone close by with it.

Sure, I have no problem with your concerns. I was just pointing out an alternative and confirming it was sanctioned by (generally conservative) local regulations.

I carry two canned air horns in addition to a whistle...

During the summer we were the unwilling participants of the heavy fog that formed in the Portland, Maine harbor. As we made our way into the waterway it became more confusing to have many horns sounding as we went along. However there was one sailboat crew banging pans from the bow. We were able to pinpoint their direction better than the horns and slowed down to see them pass withing 50 feet of our bow. Good device if you have extra crew.
