What is the best procedure for raising the mainsail with a solid vang?

Release the vang, release the main sheet, raise the sail. Not sure I understand the question?

Tension the Topping lift or set the solid boom vang to support the boom, then release the vang's purchase, release the main sheet—then raise the main. Some solid boom vangs don't do a very good job of supporting the main and may need the topping lift tensioned anyway.

Why would you have a solid vang that didn't support the boom? Isn't that the point of a solid vang???? If your solid vang doesn't support the boom, you have a soft vang. I removed my topping lift when I installed a solid vang.
