Ed, down here in fleece the boaterland, you pay for the added length. we have a friend with removable davits on a Tartan 37 (similar stern). The reason he takes them off is to avoid paying $2.25-$3.00 per foot per night. Foldable davit guys fold theirs for the same reason.

Mine are folding for the same reason Bill states. I would have thought it would be easy enough to have a removable panel that could bolt on when under way, with a connector plug, when davits are extended. That is what I will be aiming for, when I can afford to do it!
