Soft Replacement for Lazarette Hasp?

I would remove them or find another place/way to mount them... .. I can't imagine them being that annoying.. I don't thing I've ever had that problem.. perhaps they are incorrectly placed. On my boat you would have to scrunch your legs right up against the side of the foot well... almost impossible at my age.

Mine are like Joe's and I haven't had any issues in 16 years, plus another 15 years on prior Catalinas.

Go to ACE Hardware and get new assemblies, no need to pay marine store prices, plus they probably have a wider selection. You could also move them further forward or aft based on your movement patterns in your cockpit.

Mine cut my leg also so about 10 years ago I removed the entire setup and no longer lock the lazarette so no need for injury prone hasp. it stays completely shut in a bad storm.

Please reconsider this strategy - they will likely open (wide!) if you capsize.

Some tie a small line off to the underside of the hatch, and then lead it to an accessible location in the cabin to cleat off, locking the hatch that way. Simply ease the line at the cleat in the cabin to open the hatch.

These are on the engine cover and stern seats on my C310. Eventually I will be switching all of my metal ones to these for the same reason.

The one installed on my Mac laz is not in the way but it buzzes like heck when the motor is running. Drives me nuts.

P put small pads cut from self adhesive Velcro where they rattle. Now it's silent.

On my Mac 25 the PO installed a 3/8" line that was attached to the bottom of the lid and ran through the aft birth to the cabin next to the companion way where it was cleated off with cam cleat. There was no need for a hasp.

Ken's velcro idea sounds good. I bought some 3/8" weatherstripping for other reasons and simply taped a small piece to the inside (when down) part, stops the buzzing. Get creative, don't let the noise get to ya!

I agree... this is the same way I have mine rigged. and it eliminates the need for one lock and it also eliminates a rattling hasp..

use 2 pad eyes... one attached to the under side of the hatch, and the other attached somewhere directly below it to the hull.... then tie a line to the hatch eye, lead it thru the lower pad eye and forward to the cabin.... and wrap it around a cleat.

I use a snap hook on the hatch end of the line so that I can disconnect it and move it out of the way when im working in there.

I used to bark my shins on that $/@&ing hasp a lot (also on the autopilot-socket cap).
I moved the hasp forward, next to the winch-handle pocket. One of the better things I've done.

heres another Idea

At my age my sensitive skin kept getting banged up from just moving around the boat
I picked up a pair of shin guards The kind kids use to play hockey easy to put on and take off That solved the problem for me

Those hasps look like trouble to me for a lazerette latch. Joe solves the problem because his is protected by another obstacle, where a knee or shin is not likely to get a direct hit. But if it is in the open, watch out! There is no avoiding it.

I would replace it for sure. I have a latch with a ss handle that is nicely rounded and somewhat recessed, but I can't find a duplicate with a quick search. I suggest you replace yours with a flush mount latch. It should be a nice little project and upgrade.

Boat Outfitters has a lot of options for flush mount latches.

I have a problem with the hinges that have sharp corners right on top of the seat! I've skinned my knuckles and even sliced by bare foot on those things. That's an upgrade I need to make.

Is it just me or did anyone else think that Joe's cockpit was filled with water when they first looked at his picture?

I have them on mine and never raked my legs on them. Now that I know about them I'm sure from here on out I will each nd every time, thanks.

I just saw a boat where the owner had installed a short throttle cable that ran from the inside of his companion way to a pin that locked his cockpit lockers from the underside. One for each side. Very clean solution.
