I have fore and aft shore power connections. The fore receptacles are located high in the anchor locker under the hatch and the cables route through a generous slot in the hatch cover. Works well. Don't have the smart plugs - it will cost $600 to convert my boat, so for now it is the 1864 model Hubbell-style cable system.

'Course you could do the panel w/ charger - the one that gets most the action - then it would be 1/2 the price. The good thing is you would eliminate half the risk in the bargain?

Im thinking that i should be able to route the cable through a slot in the hatch and keep it from leaking at all

Well.. I received the Smartplug and was stunned to see what lurked behind the Marineco boat-side connection. The condition of the Marineco appears to be relatively new in comparison to the '86 H34. Which leads me to believe that it was replaced by a PO at some point. Once I opened it up, I realized that a short may have occurred. Anyway, I'm going to replace the entire run of wire. Combined with the new smartplug, I believe this is a much needed upgrade.

I would advise all to at a minimum, remove the Marineco boat-side connection and inspect the wiring.

That looks like a heat problem. Heat over time will burn a boat to the water line and it has. The wires get hot through some problem, even as simple as a loose connection, and can rub through the insulation and if your lucky it will trip the breaker but that only happens if they short out to themselves or ground. They can easily get hot enough to set most any item on fire.

I also purchased a new smart plug cord along with the smart plug off ebay (I don't remember the supplier, but he was very responsive and had an excellent price for the two together). I kept my old shore cord for the few times when I might need a longer reach to the shore power box and the marina doesn't have an extension handy.
