Small outboard for Pearson Commander

Hi, I'm a long-time owner of a 1964 Pearson Commander. I need to replace the outboard engine. The 9.9 hp 2-cycle Johnson outboards I've used are getting harder to find. I've tried to see if a 4 cycle engine will fit in the well- it won't and the greater weight will upset the fore/aft balance.
I'm searching for an fresh-water outboard- I'm looking at a 9.9 or 15 hp 2-cycle Johnson engine, which I understand is the same body as the 9.9. A similar engine will also work. Any suggestions as to where to find an engine that will fit? Many thanks in advance, Charles Stover

The thing you might want to think about is buying a boat for the engine and then selling the boat. For example

9.9 is a big engine for a 22 ft boat, replace it with a 6 and sell the package and keep the 9.9.

I own an electric start 15hp Evinrude and it only weighs 75 pounds. They are very powerful and well made as I think the Johnson is the same engine. This motor will plane my 10' inflatable at 25 to 30 mph! These motors should do what you need. Chief

Tohatsu makes a 6 HP called the "Sail Pro" that has an extra long shaft and a high thrust gear ratio and propeller. That might be a much better option than a 9.9 2-stroke.

I forgot to ask why do you have to replace the one you have in the first place? Is it beyond repair?

How many of these have you gone through? These 2 strokes will last forever with rebuilds. I have a 1980's Johnson 70 that had cylinder work and carb rebuilds after 30 yrs, and it starts right up and runs great. I would love to replace it with a 4 stroke, but the rebuild is way cheaper than a newer engine.
Could you rebuild the 9.9?

Then they will be really cheap....
