Small Hull Cracks

[Dean - Catalina 27]

I read on the forum a bunch of articles about the typical "Catalina Smile" (very thin cracks where the fiberglass bolts to the keel). In sanding my bottom to prep for bottom paint I noticed some of these small cracks but with no residue or rust running down the keel. Has anyone done anything to repair this area covering the cracks or just leave it? I'd like to get something done prior to launch.

Fill it with West System epoxy

I would fix it now, although it's generally regarded as mostly cosmetic.First, tighten the keel bolts to the recommended torque, the number which escapes me at the moment. Then, grind the crack down to the base of the crack, or metal, which ever comes first. Then, mix some West system epoxy with an oversize proportion of filler beads so it doesn't run too much. Apply an amount to fill in the gap, and then some. It will probably take several applications to build it up. Sand flush. Paint.Phil DeckerS/V Catmandu1982 C-27 TR

epoxy or 5200

I repaired the crack last year with epoxy. I recently read an article in pacific yachting that an adhesive/sealant like 5200 should be used because it's flexible. If my repair job doesn't hold up well, I'll grind down and re-do with 5200 this year.
