There seems to be a population that sees the romance

of sailing and believes that sailing away with a group of friends will be just the ticket. for them "sleeps six" works. After one trip reality sets in and they day sail with friends and overnight as a couple. Our entertainment expense is almost zero. Sometimes we pull a cork with friends that drop by for a visit. Be careful with inviting guests that enjoy your hospitality but are a drag on your cruising budget.

It's just another selling point

I think used boats are hard enough to sell, but in this economy it's even harder. I think anyone who has spent 30 seconds in the cabin of a small or midsize sailboat realizes that privacy isn't very different from camping in a tent. Stating maximum sleeping capacity (as long as there's an actual cushion/matress per sleeper) doesn't bother me.

different opinion

Hello, The reason I sold my Catalina 22 and bought a Newport 28 was to get bunks for everyone in the family (me, my wife and our 3 kids) so we could spend nights aboard. The Newport met that requirement. My wife and I slept in the V Berth, my oldest daughter (11 at the time) slept on the port settee, 8 year old daughter on the starboard sette, and 5 year old son in the quarter berth. Of course, when in 'sleep' mode there was no room for gear, so that ended up in the cockpit. Still, we did a few overnight trips a year with that boat and had a great time. One time I did sleep on the cockpit to get a little more room. The Newport was great for 1 night, but not so good for longer than that. So that's why I sold the Newport and bought an O'day 35. Same number of berths, but lots more space. Last year we stayed aboard for a week and it was great. With adults it's a different story, but for a family with kids, the number of berths is more important than the quoted number of 'sleepers'. Barry

We have room to sleep 9

The reality is that we have done that and it was flat out miserable. In fact, with 6 aboard, ourselves included, it is crowded. We find that with our best friends aboard, the 4 of us manage just fine, but the Admiral really prefers just the 2 of us aboard. Any more than the 2 of us and she gets testy real fast. We have found when we get more than 2 people to have to agree about everything from food, to entertainment, to anything else, it becomes a chore to get that many people to agree on something and that there is never a big enough boat.

means more like

Sleeps 4 and uncomfortably no matter how comfortable you try and make it. Romance ha! I feel like an old lady in the morning after sleeping in the v-berth. When we were out boat hunting ... we saw a couple of boats that had custom made Serta mattresses ..wish we would have gone that route. I prefer to sleep in the cockpit under the stars:) B/Seadancer
