Simulated Teak

I'm looking to replace the simulated teak on the transom step of my Hunter 49. It gets very hot. It's too hot for bare feet in the summer. Does anyone know of a similar product that stays cool in the sun?

SeaDek.....Cool under the feet, lower cost than competitive products, sticks down, replaceable, installer scans your boat where you want to install it and maintains a CAD drawing for future replacement. I installed it in the cockpit, aft lazarettes, gunnels and under the captain's seat.

Yours looks great too! I decided to pony up the extra 50 bucks twice for the boat name on each side.

HMT2.....your boat name really sets it off!! Good call. I did that on my fender covers.

I have a question about the thickness of the Sea Deck product. Does it lay in to the recessed area like the original material, or is it a little thicker? It's hard to tell from the pictures.

It is a little thicker, but the sides are contured, it comes in various degrees of thickness. In my instance it does provide a little cushion for your feet and backside.

The SeaDek in my sailboat is about 1/8 - 3/16 inch thick. I can find out from my supplier. Below is the CAD drawing of my Hunter 46 after a scan. I elected not to install it on the cockpit lazarette, outside the cockpit and entire gunnel (just a small section to make it easier for our dog to grip it getting into the and out of the cockpit without slipping. Hope that helps.

My SeaDek supplier scanned it. They scan with a portable scanner such as Proliner, which measures decks in 3D to create a digital template.

I patterned mine using a plastic sheet. Sent it to SeaDek, they digitized it and sent me a print out of it on a thick plastic sheet, made some corrections to it and they then sent me the pads and I put them down.

Was it difficult to remove the old product before installing the new?

I had Seadek on my cockpit floors for about seven years. When I decided to do the cockpit seats I decided to redo the cockpit floor so it would all match. The old Seadek was difficult to get up, it came up in parts and pieces. It took some serious scrapping to get all up. The adhesive residue came up easily with mineral spirits and a metal putty knife.

Ditto HMT2!!.............I replaced a Seadek section in the cockpit and it required mineral spirits and a towel to remove the residue.

Just returned from Catalina. The simulated teak on the aft swim deck was unbearably hot. I had to put wet towels on it. I think I'll go with Sea Deck. Now I’m thinking that the whole swim step needs to be bigger. It’s barely wide enough to kneel on and access the rear storage area. Any ideas for an extension"?

Somehow we need to redesign the Hunter stern sugar scoops with a hydraulic folding transom swim platform.
