Hey all, I need to replace all the thru-deck fittings and want them to be watertight. I have a bunch of the good exterior 100% waterproof silicone II sealant and am wondering if it is as effective as 3m 4200?

Don't use silicone if you want paint to adhere (both bottom paint or interior). 4200 or Silkaflex are generally used for thru hulls.

paint will not be a factor. will paint first, then bed the fittings.

Is this a marine silicone or a house type?

I have 4000, 4200 and 5200 and have been using the 4000 for what I've been doing with no know leaks so far, but I like to take things apart. If I was going to put it on and hope to never take it off I'd use the 4200 and some others might use the 5200.

I'm saving the 5200 for something that I want to be permanent-permanent,

Wow! That was very good. I am convinced. I will be looking for some butyl tape locally. I like how he calls the 5200 Devils Glue. Thanks

Not Silicone.

I like lifecalk seems more elastic.
good article. the key is not having wood exposed to any part of the hole.

I need to try that butyl caulk

I used butyl tape from Compass Marine to bed all of my deck fittings and trim last spring with no leaks and can remove any part easily if I need to.
It is very easy to use and clean, unlike my experiences with marine sealants and adhesives (I get the stuff all over the place and eventually on the fitting:)).
Be advised, not all butyl products are alike. MS and others have written of the black tape and butyl caulk being messy, smearing and streaking. IIRC, the Compass Marine stuff is formulated for aircraft.
After destroying a couple of Fisher portlights that a PO had bedded with 5200 just taking them out on my last boat and ripping gelcoat off of fiberglass when removing fittings on this boat I won't use 5200 on anything anymore.
The pics below show butyl tape bedding on the new toerail prior to and after installing. The stbd cabin pic shows a little of the material squeezed out by tightening and this is easily cleaned up with a plastic scrapper. I made a couple out of a scrap piece of lexan for this.

Thanks again for the insight. I think I am going to use the lifecalk stuff. Easily available and comes pretty highly recommended.

You mean mildly recommended, at least by those in the know. Butyl is highly recommended... life caulk will work, and do an OK job, but it does harden and does not remain elastic and sticky like buytl. This means if over stressed it will fail, where buytl will stretch far more, and reseal when the overstress event ends, even if it happens in 20 years after installation.
