Signet Instrument Problem

My Signet Smartpak depth sounder has a problem that was reported (by "Jim" with a Cat 30) and kicked around a little, but I didn't find a real answer. The problem is that it mostly reads 2.2, and sometimes the actual depth. It started out as intermittent thing (scaring the crap out of me) and progressed to a constant 2.2 reading. Unfortunately, cleaning the bottom/transducer didn't help. Any thoughts? I did call Signet tech support - they suggest I drop $150 for a new transducer to test the old one, but hauling out destroyed my paddlewheel transducer this year (not just the wheel, dang it) so I'm not sure I want to put $150 into a new speed transducer and $150 into a depth transducer when a new Standard Horizon (or Raytheon ST40) whole system is $330. Jim - if you're out there, what did you do?

smartpak

John: I have a smartpak on my boat that I can't even get to turn on. Could you post the Signet # so I could call them and trace the problem? Thanks, sorry about your transducer.

Thermoclines a Possibility

John, If you can get no other reading except 2.2 by powering off and on in all locations then it probably is the transducer. Thermoclines with suspended sediment cause the same symptom on Raytheons. In the thinner, warmer, and sometimes dirtier section of Narragansett Bay where I dock it happens every summer. Stan "Christy Leigh" c320 #656

Depth Solution Found

John, Yes, I did fix the problem! I turned up the "gain" control on the back all the way up and it seems to work fine now. The fact that its pinned on full probably means that I'm compensating for another problem, and that it will eventually stop working but when that day comes I'll spring for the new transducer, I guess. 36 days till spring, Jim

Thanks Jim!

I'll dig out the manual and see if I can find the "gain" - if I can get another year or two out of the instrument, I'm happy.
