We're probably all familiar with signal flags that can be used or combined to render certain meanings. "Diver down", "Not under command", "I require a tow", etc. Well, years ago I saw in a catalog a pillow with two signal flags on it which, according to the catalog, meant "Permission to Lay Alongside". Now I think that's really cute. But I've never seen it again, and can find no reference in Chapman's (or other resource) to validate the message. Has anyone else seen this? 'Would make a nice Christmas gift for the Admiral! Thanks... Captain Bruce Humphrys, Bayport, Minnesota

Charm bracelet

BoatUS sells a charm bracelet with that title, though I have no way of knowing if it is accurate. http://www.boatus-store.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/20002/-1/20002/77384/20002/73/72/7 Harry

QR1 ?

I believe that the flags QR1 is the code for "permission to lay aside". Yep, it would make a cute cushion. I've got to tell my wife about that one.

AVF?

I googled signal flags permission to lay alongside and found a couple of sites that show it as AVF. As if we weren't already confused enough! I don't think the bracelet, which shows kuzigy, is right though.

National Imagery and Mapping Agency

I got mine from a download I picked up somewhere, that's "publication 102" - International Code of Signals - from the National Imagery and Mapping Agency. Interesting publication. I couldn't find an "AVF" in it, or "KUZIGY".
