I just replaced my Shur-flo fresh water pump and now I have an interesting problem. I can't get it to pull a prime or even keep the prime. I've pressurized the intake side and it keeps the pressure. In other words, no air intake leaks up to the pump. I've also traced all the pressure side lines and there were no water leaks. This leads me to the pump itself. I'm wondering if there should be suction on the intake side if I put my hand over the intake port, there is not. Should a fresh water pump pull a vaccum on the intake side? When I prime the system artificially it will pump water but only for 30 seconds or so than it looses its prime. Any advise appreciated because I'm running out of patience on this issue. Oh and by the way, yes, the tank has water in it.

What do you mean,

you've "pressurized the intake side?"

just a tad

I put in about 10 PSI of pressure into the intake side than searched the entire system for leaks with soapy water.

Call ShurFlo...

You may have gotten a defective pump. My question was, HOW did you pressurize the intake side while the pump is still attached to the tank? 'Cuz I can't see how it's possible to pressurize the tank without blocking the tank vent...in which case, the pump would pull a vacuum that would prevent it from pumping any water.

a ha

You might have just answered my question. How could I pressure the intake side (including the tank) if the system is venting properly? Mud wasps in the vent?????? Off for yet another adventure in boating. Thanks, I'll let you know.
