My guess

is that their insurance agent didn't find anything "wrong" withthe boat, and so would not cover it. Or perhaps there was no insurance on the boat! It looks pretty nice inside - perhaps it didn't "sink" to the extent people are imagining (perhaps there was a thru hull that began leaking, and so they pulled the boat from the water?) , but if it was me, I'd stay away from this boat. Kind of like buying a house that had a major termite infestation. Sure, the termites are gone. but how much of the house did they eat before then!

Sunk

I was trying to think, maybe these guys aren't as guilty as it sounds. Maybe the boat sunk slightly and didn't get completely covered up. But, I reread the OP and saw "batteries were awash"! Didn't even take the time and effort of pumping out the water that was in the boat? Scary! Even if the water damage isn't bad, I'd look for another boat strictly because their listing is inaccurate and it sounds like they're jerking you around.

DON'T FALL IN LOVE

You'll have plenty of time to develop a love/hate relationship with whatever boat you buy. But do your homework. At this point in the buying stage, it's all about the analysis, not the emotion.

Treat it as though it were a bare hull. Consider

that everything will need replacing. If you do the work yourself allow 5 years labor. If you think to hire it done, buy something else.

Gotta love a thread...

...that gives Fred a legitimate reason to show off the fruits of his labor (written w/ envy). But...if you had a 'Do Over', would you do it again or RUN like most have recommended?

Buy this oneinstead - and it is closer

Had a chance to look at this beauty in Rochester yesterday. Rumor is you can pick it up for 80k and she is loaded, supposedly with good sails. I amnaot selling this boat, I was just really impressed for the money. She is a true yacht. http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listing/pl_boat_detail.jsp?&units=Feet&id=926096&lang=en&slim=broker&&hosturl=rcryachts&&ywo=rcryachts&

A Good Bye

Most often what seems a good buy will not move a doubtful laden question. My advice and suggestion - this good buy should receive a good bye. See how the rail sets on another boat my friend! Be willing to write off your loses on this trip as learning experience to homework required before traveling to view a sailboat. Recommend you buy a boat to sail not rebuild. Someday, hopefully, you will look back to this as a humorus event in the passion to find the right boat, unless you do buy the boat, in which case, you will undoubtly brag, the truth be known, about how you fixed up a sunken sailboat. And someone like you will want to get a good buy on it. Bye your leave?

Brokers dreams break you

Nice pun Joe. If this is a true story, no offense Gene, it happens, RUN from this broker! Sank and 119K STILL? That is sheer chicanery and shoe-shine-shinola. 1) the wiring is shot, replace ALL wiring. 2) Electronics? Replace. 3) Engine, starter, Alt, volt reg, et al shot. 4) Fuel tanks, flush and clean, fuel lines too. 5) would you trust this boat? 6) Brokers are car salesmen with boat shoes...;-) Call ANY surveyor and ask his telephone rec on a 120K for a sunk/raised yacht? I sould advise against it if it were 50K.

Grizz, Fred owns a Ficarra, not a Hunter.

I have to say that if you buy a trashed boat (Fred had no choice) buy it right and do it right. Fred has done a great job and made his boat fit him! It is all about what you want and want to do. r.w.landau

Grizz, I rebuilt my boat from a candidate for the

chainsaws. Would I do it again? I don't know ! I was 51 when I started and am 69 now . The boat has served us for 8 years now . If I could turn back the clock I would do another because I have a boat that pleases me in every regard. It takes a certain mind set to persist with such a long term project. Sometimes it will seem like each time you take something apart it exposes three more problems. But Fred and I know where every fitting, nail, screw, wirethru-hull, ventilator, handhold, and steering gear part is and where all of the spares are. We don't worry during a storm if that yard man did a proper job on that repair. I could take my boat anywhere and if I had a complete electrical failure I would be able to continue because everything electrical has a non electrical backup.

Thanks R.W And my boat was less than a 'push'

if you figure my time. At least it came out my way. Gene, I had five acres of land in my back yard too. I've never met anybody lucky enough to do this work the way I did it. RUN!!!!!!!

RUN AWAY!

ABSOULTLY RUN AWAY! You can pick up a nice one, any time of year, probably in your home port, for what? 5k more? Would you place a bet on red if it only paid a nickle on a dollar bet?

Landau - That was Really Good!

Reply #37 - guess when someone customizes their boat as much as Fred has that's a good name for it! Really good humor! I'm still laughing.

We're Running!!

It's nice to have a reality/sanity check available on this. At 67 I'm getting too old for a handyman special. Thanks for all the advice. Thanks also for the tips on the other two 380's in Florida. We'll keep looking.
