I own a 1986 O'day Day Sailler III. My 2 hp Honda 4 cycle motor was stolen from my garage after winterization. Bummed. I do not know what size shaft (15 or 20") that motor was. Been to two Outboard Motor stores with all demesions of my boat hoping they could assist with the size. Strange...they could not help. Any Oday Day Sailer folks know what size shaft motor I need> Thanks amcrapa@yahoo.com

My first boat was a 1972 Day Sailer II. I bought a brand new (at the time) 2-stroke Sears Gamefisher 3 hp short shaft and it powered the boat perfectly. In fact, over 20 years later, I still have the motor and keep it aboard my O'Day 22 as an emergency spare. Although a short shaft will work fine with your current boat, you won't be happy with it if you upgrade to a bigger boat down the line and want to keep the motor, so that's worth thinking about if you're picking a new motor. Anything bigger than the Day Sailer will almost certainly require a long shaft.

Best Wishes,
Dan

I just went through the same decisions with a DS III. Most newer OB's in the 3-4 HP range are 15" or 20" shafts, more 15's than 20's. I bought a 1990 3 HP Johnson which actually has a shaft length of 17", the distance from the casvitation plate to the top inside edge of the transom bracket. Mounted on the transom the cavitation plate is just slightly above the bottom edge of the transom. It pushes fine although it may cavitate a little in bumpy seas. If I was buying new, I would get a 20" shaft. Buying used is a little more difficult but with some patience you'll find a motor which will work. Keep your eye on Ebay and Craigslist.

Good Luck !

Michael,

We have a 1987 DS3 and have a Mercury SailPower 2-stroke, 4hp with 20" shaft. Works fine for us. Good luck.

I've attached a picture of a HONDA 2hp on a Rhodes 19, this would be the long-shaft model. I also attached a scanned copy of the short-shaft model as shown in a brochure.
