Shaft Packing Gland tube/hose

If the motor & shaft are in alignment the hose pretty much just sits there holding water outside the hull. If something causes the shaft to wobble the hose will start to get a work out and water will try to enter the boat. Then it is only a matter of time.
Actually, every time the shaft turns the hose is torqued because the interface between the packing and the shaft is not friction free. It is especially bad when shifting from forward to reverse quickly and repeatedly. This constant twisting, albeit a small amount and age cause the hoses to fail. Hose failure is kind of a big problem.

Would the 2"ID x4" length Buck Algonquin Shaft Log Hose fits my 1" shaft? I believe it's standardized across couple of Hunter range of sailboats with 1" shaft.
Please advise. Thank you.

Never worked on this end but I think this will give you the proof you need.

Use this Hunter drawing to determine what the labels refer to. Not the terms I would use but I didn't build the boat.

The hose fits on the outside of the shaft log and outside of the stuffing box, they should be the same size. If you have hauled out, loosen the straps on the stuffing box and pull out the stuffing box by about 1/4", use caliper to measure the outside diameter. Order the hose that size. The propeller shaft goes through the stuffing box and has nothing to do with the hose diameter.

I think @Ken13559 is still in the water and he's trying to get all his ducks (dead and otherwise) in a line before hauling. That's the reason for the in&out&roundabout way I suggested for measuring the fittings OD and hose ID in post #23. Also, all his boat parts are all shipped on a slow boat from China (or worse) which is another reason for not hauling before having the parts in hand and ready to go. The Hunter stuffing box drawing I supplied is for my 1999 H-310 which is almost identical to his 2002 Hunter 326.

It was only as I posted my first post that I realized the required hose for his gland assembly was "probably, maybe, and quite likely " an 1-3/4" ID hose and not the 2" ID Buck Algonquin Shaft Log Hose he was looking at purchasing.

I haven't heard from him since and hope he hasn't done anything drastic .

Ralph,
Indeed my boat is still on water and I'm still trying to get my ducks to line up
I measured the Packing Gland OD and got 1.88" 48mm. Now that falls between 1_3/4" and 2".
Think I'll go check out my friends H280 & H33 for their Packing Gland OD.

Guess that cinches it.

1-3/4" ID hose = 44.5 mm.
2" ID hose = 50.8 mm.

Your packing gland OD = 48 mm.
2" ID Buck Algonquin hose it is.
