In this photo it looks like you clamped the PSS boot to a fiberglass tube which is the shaft log.

I wonder if all 310 Catalinas in that era where of similar design?
A marine mechanic installed mine while I tapped the shaft from below so I did not see the set up.
I'm going to check and see how far the PSS boot is slipped over the tube....hope it's not past the first convelope. I did replace the brass fitting with a nylon from PSS and a vent tube later.

That photo was illustrative only and the PSS had not yet been fully seated aligned and tightened. It is however roughly in-line with the end of the smooth part of the PSS.

You do not want to slide the PSS on far enough so the bellows convoluted folds are impinging on the end of the stern tube. All too often I have seen a PSS where the stern tube is half way up the compression ridges (convolutes /folds). This could potentially cause it to chafe through if the alignment was off or the shaft bent.

This is what it looked like fully installed. Notice that there is still quite a bit of stern tube exposed. The stern tube was seated right to the end of the smooth area where the hose clamps reside.

I usually measure the bellows depth to the internal smooth edge:

Then transfer this measurement to the shaft log with electrical tape. Then when installing a PSS I know when it is perfectly seated to the proper depth:

In one photo your bellows acutally looks compressed compared to mine.

Paul the bottom photo of the shaft log, with red in it, is not the C-310 it's my CS-36 with v-drive..

Hey guys, did some research on the PSS there a couple of types, that looks like what they call a dripless, When you slide the stern tube on and clamp it, you then mark the shaft where the bellows is at rest. Then according to shaft size in the directions they will give you a measurement, say 1", you compress the bellows 1" past the line, and tighten down the ss. there should be 2 sets of 2. I had whats called a lasdrop PSS for about 12 years, first 8 were fine, after I was doing a lot of leaking. My own fault I should have done maint to it. I am now repowering and going wf new everything prop to engine, and I am going back to stuffing box. Yours looks new, so you should get a lot of years out of it. Look online google lasdrop, or dripless shaft seals they have a couple of real good installation series with Pics. I let mine go because I knew I had an engine /shaft/cutlass/whole nine yards coming real soon. I am going back to stuffing because they can be messed wf while in water, if the PSS screws up you are done. Its just my personal choice they are both good. Red
