Setting Up for Safe Single Handing?

I want to reconfigure my 76 Catalina 27 for safer sailing by myself. I already have a rf jib. This requires re-routing halyards, reefing line, outhaul, adding a coach top winch, etc. to center as much activity in the cockpit as possible and reduce or eliminate the need to work at the mast. I've looked at newer boats and other brands for ideas but I'm nervous about simply copying what appears to work on a similar sized Hunter for example. Does anyone have any specific tips that would aid me before I start drilling holes...??? Thanks

Single Handing

My boat came ready rigged for basic singlehanding, but I have found that buying a good autopilot has negated the necessity for most of it Keith Branton

Autopilot recommendations

I will end up doing a lot of single-handing and keep hearing that an autopilot makes all the difference. Any recommendations (specific or general) or just comments?

singlehanded

I just set up my 73 cat 27 to single hand. i agree with the autopilot. i have an older autohelm that works great. I brought my main halyard and boom vang back to the cockpit starboard side. I also have rf headsail. outhaul is at the end of the boom on one side and topping lift on the other, both with cleats. I would suggest finding a similar year cat 27 and copying it. email medic6@msn.com for more info or pictures. brian
