I am running into problems with seized screws and bolts that are set into tapped surfaces including plates on the mast, cheeks on the boom and mounting points on my radar arch. Is there a way to meove seized fasteners effectively, or should I just forget it and re-drill and re-tap? If the former, what techniques are the best and what order of "attempt" do you recommend? Thanks Ron Breen

WD40

Use a lot of WD40 or Liquid Wrench and let it soak in overnight. Then gently try to remove by "rocking" the screws. "Rocking" is turning clockwise then counterclockwise until it breaks loose. When installing in the first place use an anitsieze compound - it'll help with removal later. Ellis s/v Cynara Lancer 30

Whatever works....

...works. If you used all the penetrating liquids/sprays and they haven't worked, try gently tapping the heads of the screws/bolts with small hammer to break them free. And if that doesn't get them loose, try CAREFULLY heating the heads with a small pencil butane torch. Good luck.

Pepsi or coke - you choose

either might work to penetrate and lubricate the threads. Give it some time, tap them a little, and carefully heat if necessary. Wash it off well when you are done. You didn't say what kinds of metals. I guess you mean stainsless steel and aluminum. Use antisieze when you put them back.

Seize the screw!

Ron The very best anti- seizing material I've found is PB Blaster, available at Ace Hardware, highly recommended. Makes WD40 and Liquid Wrench look like water. It really works. Large spray can. We did a lot of removal on the SS screws on our aluminum boom last year - great stuff. At least worth a try for you, but you'll love it. Follow the directions (really!). You'll most likely also need an impact driver to get them all out. Stu

"Mouse Milk"

This is without a doubt, the best penetrating oil I've ever used, and I've owned and repaired some rusted old hulks over the years. I'm going to try PB Blaster, and see how that works in comparison.
