Does anyone know which brand got the shortest & slimmest AA batteries (i.e. 49.2mm x 13.5mm)? The standard is within 49.2–50.5mm in length & 13.5–14.5mm in diameter. Can't believe I am asking this question.

I would just like to know what equipment requires a AA made to the low side of it's tolerance range :)
Me too. I'm assuming its some funky piece of gear with a VERY small battery compartment.

I truly did not know AA's came in different sizes. Never been an issue for me in my 54 years.

Me too. I thought he was just pulling our legs but apparently is an issue for our friends up north. Most battery compartments are spring loaded on the neg. side so it isn't an issue.

Like most mass produced items they are built to a max/min spec. I'm guessing the OP is looking for a brand that routinely tends to build to the minimum end of the industry specification.

Interesting what they would fit in as the tolerance is fairly tight already

+ or -.5 mm or .019

Thank you, all, for your replies including those couldn't-resist remarks. Even I felt odd myself when posting this question; but, here was my reason.

Yesterday, I bought an original brand dry cell battery pack for my Standard Horizon handheld VHF to put in the emergency ditch bag along with some new Duracells. I then tried to fit the new batteries in to ensure the VHF would function when I really need it. Well, none of the Duracells could fit but rather, I found an old (it came with a flashlight & wasn’t a mainstream brand) AA battery and it fit perfectly! I then did some research and learnt that others had experienced the same ( http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1702565 ). Of course, I can save myself from searching by simply refund the dry cell battery pack.

Hey, this is good to know. I have a Standard Horizon HandHeld with battery pack. I've only ever put rechargeable batteries in the pack. They fit. Try that.

Chill the batteries? Heat the pack? Both?

More importantly, for those using rechargeables, do you actually find that they work or last at all? I really hate throwing away used up batteries, but I've never had a rechargeable battery that I thought had a reasonable life either in use or in storage. Avalanche transceivers display a battery 'percentage' remaining when you power them up. The one time that I installed a freshly charged pair of reusable AAs in my beacon, I saw 75% the first time that I turned it on! I've been reluctant to use them in anything that I care about ever since…
