Rechargeable are 1.2v Alkaline are 1.5v
Some equipment has battery type setting.
Some equipment can work with lower battery volts are fine. Many are not.
I ditched the rechargables for that reason.
Also i thing some rechargable are slightly bigger.

My experience with rechargeables in a camera is they are a waste of money and time. Lucky to get 20% of the usage time compared to disposables. Also using them in the television remote is same story, frankly they stink.
If I recall correctly that battery tray for the radio has molded sides that are curved to hold the batteries in place. The sides act like a spring for retention, I wonder if you just need to push on the batteries hard enough to get them in place? They do not go in easy but the material is pretty flexible.

I agree. I started using high capacity lithium ion batteries for on-camera flash several years ago. They last longer, are lighter-weight and you don't ever have those pesky little oh fiddle sticks moments because you forgot to charge them.

I have been using Energizer rechargeables for my Garmin 78sc for the reason of not wanting to dispose batteries too frequently, and have not encountered capacity problems. Luck of the draw I suppose.

Just forcefully pushed the Energizer rechargeables into the dry cell battery pack and managed to fit them in. However, they expanded the inside frame of the battery pack by a little and the battery pack could no longer fit into the VHF. I ended up needing to use a screwdriver to get the rechargeables out.

I then tried to forcefully push the new Duracells into the dry cell battery pack and it could fit into the VHF, although that almost broke the two plastic legs on the top of the battery pack.

Went to Walmart last night and found a slimmer and shorter AA battery: Panasonic!!!
