I'm leaning toward the yoga mats. Two bonuses that I see.

1- help to prevent my dog from slipping around.
2- A little bit of cushion for me wouldn't hurt.

Our Bassett Hound, after one weekend aboard, discovered on his own that sleeping on the cockpit sole was his best bet. When we tack, he just maneuvers to the other side and resumes his nap.

Cannot over stress the importance of the life jacket mentioned by other respondents. Our guy used to enjoy reclining on the cockpit seat next to the helmsperson until one day, on a particularly windy tack, he was launched through the stern rail and into the drink. The flourescent orange jacket made it easy to keep him in sight and provided us with an excellent opportunity for our DOB procedures.

Thanks to this thread I know understand why my cat has a habit of only staying on counter tops, settees, v-berth and quarter-berth when below. Even if we are in the slip. Underway, she sits on her cushion or curled up between my feet when I am standing behind the wheel.

She figured out how slippery the plastic is and is only going where she can grip.
