Seat Cushion ?

I took my dog out sailing in my 22 yesterday. She had a good time but the seating area was like an ice skating rink for her. I'm trying to think of an inexpensive alternative to having cushions made.

I'm thinking of buying a rubberized/foam workout mat and cut it to size.

I'm wondering if anyone has a better suggestion?

The first thing to invest in would be a roll of anti-skid rubber matting which is used to keep dishes from skating off of the table when you're heeled. This can be purchased at any camping store.

Put this on the floor and then a good looking mat over it and Fido should be as happy as if rolling in something disgustingly foul .

I use used carpet that I cut to fit when "Little Miss Magic" goes sailing with us. It's removable, doesn't slide and give's a good grip for little claws... heh heh. SS

we use yoga mats...

haven't bothered to cut them to size. we carry 2 and drape one over the coaming when the dogs are boarding so they can get into the cockpit on their own. rubber bathmats can be helpful too.

Just by chance we purchased a half dozen back yard lounge chair cushions on sale from Home Depot for our first crossing to the Caribbean. Found they did not absorb water or mold at all! The same cannot be said of every other cushion we've ever had on a boat, including the custom ones for the cockpit made by reputable canvas shops or the floating square ones from boat stores. Try one of these with velcro to hold it in place for the dog and it won't retain smells or hair.

We use cheap indoor outdoor carpeting with snaps to hold in place.

Just get your dog some non slip doggy boots. They work and friends or mine have them for their dog, no slipping or scratching the boat or holing the inflatable and no coral/oyster cuts. http://waggle.com.au/dog-boots-c23

Shelve liners work great....you can get them both ways....with some sticky stuff on the back or not. I prefer the ones with sticky stuff on back....works great for drunk wenchs too......lol......

No Sea Legs?

Any dog w/out Sea Legs doesn't deserve to go sailing!

Although we have a Portuguese Water Dog, The chances of retrieving her from a Dog Overboard in lively weather are about as good as retrieving a Person.

When the wind comes up, she is restrained in a travel harness with a 4' tether: not so likely to break her neck in a severe movement. A Doggie Flotation Device is also good, but less comfortable. We have one of those also.

We have two dogs on board they both have booties and life jackets. It took a little for them to get comfortable with them, but they move around with no slipping even when the deck is wet. Also I have netting on the safety lines.

We use bath/kitchen matts that have the non-skid attached. We have one for each side of the cockpit.

We have a miniature poodle and ensure he wears a lifejacket and tether when we are underway. We have also put a bath matt in the cockpit and he is very happy and secure.

I do keep a life vest on her. I have an outdoor mat/carpeting on the floor. It's the seating area I was focusing on. A lot of great responses, except for the one about not having sea legs.

She is used to motor boats. She was basically raised on them. The sailing thing is new to her. I'm sure she will adjust.

Shelf liner works very well as well as helps keep cushions in place too. In fact shelf liner works well keeping dinner ware, books and small items on shelves too.

We have a fish named Ruby. She stays home. If we go away for an extended time she goes to the neighbors.
If worst came to worst and we had to take her I would use a 2L pop bottle.

inexpensive yoga mats work great. non skid on both sides, easy to roll up and stow. and you can take them to the beach to lay on. My little dog Kip sailed around the world with me without sea boots etc. he had a vest he would wear on occasion, and he did just fine.
