1977 O'Day 27 -- the upper shroud chainplate penetrates the deck and bolts on to the interior bulkhead. No matter what I do, I can't seem to seal the leak. I pump in the caulking & it still leaks. Any suggestions?

Disassemble

Not dissemble, a word frequently misused by some. Have you completely taken it apart? If you're still "pumping it in", wonder where it's going? Really, have you unloaded the shroud, taken off the turnbuckle, and disassembled the fittings so that you have disconnected what's down below from what's above the deck? Stu

chainplate leaks

Stu was not dissembling when he suggested you completely disassemble and unload the chain plates. Make certain you dry out (& repair, if required) the deck core and surrounding areas. It’s very difficult to seal anything from the outside - like applying a patch. It’s always better to seal from the inside - like installing a gasket. Be certain to check for “ovalling” in the fastener holes, when you remove the chainplate tang from the bulkhead. This would indicate movement, which would cause sealants to separate and leak. - The deck plates are merely decorative, and should be completely unloaded. - Deckplates mounted on flat & level sections of deck (no raised pad & no slope) almost always leak. Water “pools” at the plate, with predictable result. HTH, Gord

One thing to add

You don't mention what caulk you use. Beside the need to remove old caulk before applying new stuff, some of it will not stick to itself. If you try applying silicone to itself (that's dried), well, forget it.

Chronic problem

Eventually the bulkhead will rot & need replacement / repair too. Have seen a lot of posts from O'Day 27 owners about this: don't know if other makes / models are similarly afflicted, but it's sure annoying. My boat ( a '78 O27 ) only seems to leak on the port side. Removing the little trim plates and re-caulking with 3M5200 cured the problem for abt. a month. There is a cure. Take too long to post it here, but if you want some details, e-mail me thru the O'Day Owners registry.
