I cried myself to sleep last night and my family is heartbroken over this entire situation and I am prepared for the I told you so's.(Waffle ) We got our deposit back and walked. I am counting on Phil Phater aka Nice N Easy to fill you in on the details because I am devastated. One good thing came out of yesterday's slap in the face. My family and I got to meet Phil aka Nice N Easy and we loved every minute of it. He is an intelligent, patient, funny, kind gentleman. The list goes on. My family took to him right away. He is welcome in our lives, and in our home at anytime and if he ever needs anything we'll drop everything to do it. B/Seadance, It has often been said the a

boat and a wife are similar. but I think that they got the genders wrong. Buying a boat is a lot like finding a man in your life, You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you get to you dream boat. I am sorry that this one turned into a frog. Don't lose heart. Make some comfort food, say damn everybody, kiss your kids and your husband and start the search again.

survey or not survey

Caleb, I did not mean to say that one should not get a survey, I am sure there are many great surveyors out there and if I was purchasing a boat I would definitely have it surveyed. All I meant to say is that the survey is not a guarantee that everything is going to be alright. I would follow the surveyor through the boat and make damn sure he did his job and then do my own survey as well with the help of some knowledgeable friends. Luckily Seadance and company had a friend in Phil to help them make a hard but good decision.As far as wooden boats, I have owned several, some bad and some good, after looking around, I think my next boat will probably be wooden again. I have made my living working wih wood and know it's strengths as well as it's drawbacks.A well maintained wooden boat can last for decades. Besides, I know how to work it and I can find wood anywhere. I guess sometimes I am a bit too romantic and maybe too much of a luddite. To each his own.

Nice N Easy, you are a good man

I would like to take the time to think you for you helping Seadace and her family! They were very lucky to have a experienced sailor like you help them! Everything works out for the best in the long run. There is always a boat out there to buy! There is a boat out there for Seadance and this Hunter was not the boat.I hate the fact that I am such a na sayer! I never would, "I told you so". I am sorry for your lose. I really like Seadance and she has taught me how to be nicer on this board. I just wanted to help.

There is a Small book on How to do a survey

This book has a checklist so that you can evaluate a boat early in the buying process. This isn't a substitute for a professional survey just a way to eliminate obvious problem boats. As to professional surveyors you are paying for an opinion.....some opinions aren't worth much.  I forget the exact title to the book but I bought it at Amazon.com and it helped me walk away. I was really disappointed when I drove from Birmingham to New Orleans to look at a boat "in great shape" to spend less than 5 minuteslooking at the boat. It was in horrible condition with a bilge full of oil. Some brokers are so full of crap. Another boat we looked at near Biloxi was actually green inside from mold. The broker knew that we'd have to drive hours to look at the boat and assured us that it was in good condition. I know that the brokers job is to sell boats but they should have some consideration for the people that are looking to buy a boat.

Been there Seadance

I know how it feels to fall in love with a boat only to find out it's not the right boat. My wife and I fell in love with the first 35.5 we looked at and spend several days cleaning and planning upgrades only the have the survey and find out we really didn't want that boat. The wife was actually more devastated than I was and it took her almost a year to embrace the newer better boat we found. Keep looking and don't let this negative experience turn you away.
