Tums! Chew one or two at the first

sign of discomfort. Chew two more as often as needed. OK for kids. Worst case is you may get a bit constipated if you eat most of a jar. Scopalomine patches work, but they take 6-8 hours to take effect. I cut them in half and use one half per day. I weigh 150 lbs and I seem to only need small doses of all drugs for the desired effect, alcohol included.

Sand Sailor, I may not be a cheap drunk.

perhaps I just drink less of more expensive booze. Truthfully, I have been known to drink pretty much whatever is on hand, just a bit less than some of my thirstier (is that a word?) buddies.

Try Bonine the night before.

You may want to try Bonine the night before. That way she can sleep it off, but it will still be in her system. Then you can try any or all of these other remedies (start with something like ginger ale, ginger beer (non-alcholic), ginger snaps etc.

My homemade molasses cookies!

My husband and I just came back from spending 2 weeks sailing the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior on our 40 foot Hunter. During that time we had friends and family sailing with us. We have been lucky and not had a lot of folks getting sick. However, on this trip the 7 year old grandson was getting queasy one day but he had been spending a lot of time in the cabin reading comic books so we made him sit in the cockpit at the helm for a while and he was fine. I took a batch fo my homemade molasses cookies that I had put a little extra ginger in. I fed them to skipper and crew a couple of mornings when the seas were a bit rolly and they worked great. I am toying with the idea of maybe adding some finely chopped candied ginger the next time and see how that goes.

Thanks for the postive post

Thank you! My daughter and future son-in-law are getting married next week and embarking on a cruise. Someone told us how great the SeaBands were, but then we kept reading conflicting opinions. We sure don't want either one of them to be sick on their honeymoon

Seabands ..

If one is heading to your local university library, one might want to examine the following articles. Note the "Institute of Naval Medicine - England". The results of these studies indicate that seabands have no observable effect when tested in a controlled study beyond the placebo effect. There are also studies that show they do have an effect, but the likely case for these is that it is purely a psychological effect. Even if they do not work and you end up tossing them there is room for more. So eating too many cookies will never spoil your appitite.

Here is the recipe Seadance

POTL Molasses Cookies 4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 2 1/4 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons ground ginger ( I usually use 3 and you can add 3 T. of minced candied ginger for a more effective seasick remedy) ¾ teaspoons ground cloves 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, softened (You can use all butter too) 1/2 cup vegetable shortening 1 cup white sugar 1 cup brown sugar, packed 1/2 cup + 2 Tbls. unsulfured molasses (use dark or blackstrap, not light) 2 large eggs Preheat oven to 325°F. and lightly grease 2 large baking sheets. In a large bowl whisk together flour, salt, baking soda, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon. In another large bowl with an electric mixer beat together butter, shortening, and both sugars until light and fluffy and beat in molasses. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture and combine well. In a small shallow bowl put remaining 1/2 cup sugar. Form dough into 1-inch balls and roll in sugar. On baking sheets arrange balls about 3 inches apart. Bake cookies in batches in middle of the oven 12-13 minutes, or until puffed and golden. (Cookies should be soft.) Transfer cookies with a metal spatula to racks to cool. Enjoy!

Thank you Princess cookie recipe(seasickness)

thank you for the cookie recipe. I will try this. My 9 year old got queasy on us midway on our last sail. I'd like to keep as much on hand on the boat to cover that. She got bit by a nasty horse fly near Deer Island and I was glad I "overpacked" and had the benadryl and cortizone cream to take care of that. The dramamine does not seem to help her and I did call the pediatrician to call in the Meclizine HCI someone else posted as backup with fresh ginger and gingerale and your cookies. Being seasick is no fun when your suppost to be having fun! B/Seadance

Ginger snaps work

Ginger snaps work for many people and they are really good! Ingredients: •1⁄2CupVegetableOil •1⁄2CupBrownSugar •1⁄2CupMolasses •1tspBakingPowder •1tspBakingSoda •1⁄2tspSalt •1tspCinnamon •1tspGroundGinger •1⁄2tspGroundCloves •1⁄2tspNutmeg •2to3TbsChoppedCrystallizedGinger •12/3CupAllPurposeFlour While oven pre-heats to 350 degrees, lightly grease a cookie sheet. Then, in a medium bowl, beat together oil, brown sugar, molasses, baking powder, baking soda, salt, & spices. Mix in flour. Shape into 1 to 1-1⁄2 inch balls, roll in granulated sugar & place on the cookie sheet. Use a fork to press them down. Bake for about 9 minutes. Let cool. They will be soft on the inside and crisp on the outside. They’ll keep for two weeks in a Ziplock bag or a tin with no refrigeration.

Electric shock treatment

I just got back from a two week cruise up the East River, all around Conn. and the Long Island North shore and then back down the river with and outside run to the Fire Island Inlet. Normally I take Bonine on the ocean legs. The bays are fine but I can get pretty nauseous on the outside runs. I was able to pickup one of those electric shock wrist gadgets pretty cheap last winter when a local West Marine closed. I have to say it really worked for me. I did not use anything except the wrist gadget the entire trip which included some pretty rocky days and nights at anchor in NY harbor. The wrist gadget normally sells for around $100, I got mine for $40. I would gladly pay $200 for one knowing now that it works (for me) and is a great alternative to taking drugs which really tire me out. PS; I did see the Myth Buster episode on sea sickness. Yes the wrist gadgets didn't work for them. But then again the behind the ear oil didn't do a thing for me either and some people have posted hear that it works fine for them. I think if you have a problem with sea sickness you just have to try whats out there and see what works for you.

Whatever works

I think with the exception of the scopolomine patch most everything out there just works on placebo effect. Try different things and go with what works. Anybody I see looking green on my boat, I put them to work, usually steering, to get their mind off of it. Fortunately I haven't been seasick for 40 years but now that I've said it I'll probably be losing my cookies next time I go out.

I'm not sure about the spelling. This was recommended at the safety briefing, when I did the Bermuda race a couple of years ago, as the best medication for seasickness. It's not legal in the US, but is over-the-counter in Britain and, presumably, BVI. If I were you, I'd get some when I was over there and try it out. Second choice: scopolamine: the transderm patch.

Ginger, and Motion-Eaze

Regarding Ginger, the capsules and candies ginger are probably best. Most ginger ale contains zero ginger. The behind-the-ear herbal oil remedy is called Motion-Eaze. It works for many people. I became a believer when it worked consistently for our dog, who gets sick easily on board unless we use the product. It has also worked on a couple of people I know who suffer from bouts of vertigo (on shore).
