One of our aspirations is to sail the sea of cortez. but I've heard and read that the weather there can be extreme and a difficult trip is to be expected. has anybody sailed there and if so how did you find the sailing?

cheers Greg

Google Chinook and Sea Of Cortez......

Lots of boats our size have sailed there. Be very aware of hurricane season. I would like to do it, but probably never will,

We have chartered in the Sea of Cortez out of La Paz and during the appropriate season it seems pretty benign. Had a wonderful time. Suggest you check and go down to the page about cruising the area.

Hey justsomeguy....do you just sail around the Rockypoint area or do you sail down the east or west coasts on multi day jaunts. I've enjoyed Rockypoint for decades. spring break from ASU back in the 70's lol.

cheers

I pretty much keep to the area, what with an admiral and two dogs needing their shoretime.

There are many accounts of sailing the Sea of Cortez as the Baja HaHa has been leading rallies to Cabo San Lucas every fall for 23 years now. West coast sailors frequently encounter folks who have sailed into the southern areas of the Sea, or who have chartered from La Paz. Of course, you do not mention your actual plan--whether to sail the coast of California & Baja California (implied), or to trailer your MacGregor 25 to Mexico (San Carlos?) and launch from there, etc. If you develop a plan, even a provisional one, with specific questions, you might get more useful input.:waycool:

MacGregor Mac26X Trailer sailing for adventure,
I'm encouraged by ya'lls posts. How does one safely trailer a boat to Puerto Penasco? Where is it safe to park the truck and trailer? I don't speak spanish............

Greg, I have sailed quite a bit on the Baja side of the Sea of Cortez. I usually trailer to Loreto from boise and launch at Puerto Escondido. I've spent a month on my 26x there twice. It really is a great but remote cruising area. I can give you quite a bit of info if you are interested. Feel free to email me at westerdoll@msn.com or ask more questions here. Mark

MacGregor Mac26X Trailer sailing for adventure,
I checked the state departments web site:

Mexico Travel Warning
Sonora: Nogales, Puerto Peñasco, Hermosillo, and San Carlos are major cities/travel destinations in Sonora - Sonora is a key region in the international drug and human trafficking trades and can be extremely dangerous for travelers. Travelers throughout Sonora are encouraged to limit travel to main roads during daylight hours. Defer non-essential travel to the region west of Nogales, east of Sonoyta, and from Caborca north (including the towns of Saric, Tubutama, and Altar), and the eastern edge of Sonora bordering Chihuahua, as these are known centers of illegal activity. Travelers should also defer non-essential travel to the eastern edge of the state of Sonora, which borders the state of Chihuahua (all points along that border east of the northern city of Agua Prieta and the southern town of Alamos), and defer non-essential travel within the city of Ciudad Obregon and south of the city of Navojoa. You should exercise caution while transiting Vicam in southern Sonora due to roadblocks that can be instituted ad hoc by local indigenous and environmental groups. U.S. citizens visiting Puerto Peñasco should use the Lukeville, Arizona/Sonoyta, Sonora border crossing, and limit driving to daylight hours. Please see above for general conditions for travel in Mexico.

I did my week liveaboard ASA classes out of La Paz in Jan of 2014. Growing up in San Diego the water in La Paz at that time was warm enough for me to snorkel and swim in (your mileage may vary). We bounced around the islands just outside of La Paz. Wonderful time. Loved the amount of wildlife in the area.

Saw this guy in a couple of the anchorages in a boat about your size and he didn't seem to have any worries. The weather in that area of Mexico can be dramatic so keep a close eye on the reports and have a plan to jump into a secure location ready.

In the first paragraph, it mentions that traveling in Mexico is safe. In the second paragraph, it mentions that they believe that the press has sensationalized the drug-related violence.
It is only common sense to travel during daylight hours.
I routinely roll unaccosted through the Lukeville-Sonoyta border, and about half the time I'm stopped by the Mexican agents for a quick perusal. Nice folks. Once, they offered me a pork sandwich, which I enjoyed with them. They refused the beer I offered.
Beyond that, the authors of that piece are semi-literate real estate agents. No offense to any real estate agents who frequent these boards.

The two years I lived in Ensenada I traveled up and down the peninsula via bus. While I understand that's different than driving your own vehicle, I never felt unsafe once past Tijuana.

I've taken that bus ride from Ensenada to Tijuana myself, and there were no chickens on that bus. The movie they showed during the trip was in Spanish, however.

Yep, it has always been good common sense to drive only during daylight even before the drug wars. I also didn't see anything in that article or the other one to raise a red flag about going.

If I was to go I would most likely put in at Puerto Peñasco and sail south on the west side of the Sea of Cortez as far as I could and then back up the east side. That would limit the driving in Mexico a lot. This would be if I had considerable time for the trip, like say at least a month. If less I'd probably go down to San Carlos, but the area that interests me, are the islands that are about equal distance from Puerto Peñasco and San Carlos so either place could work.

I've yet to read of a sailor having problems down there, but I'm sure there has been a case somewhere, but we can make the same case for here at home or about any place else.
