~20 years ago I spent a week in San Felipe, which is on the West side. a small fishing village with 1 1/2 very nice motels and a restaurant. plenty of people spoke enough broken english that we got by just fine, and it's a wonderful area.

MacGregor Mac26X Trailer sailing for adventure,
I'm sure it's safe enough on the water. If I ever have a keel boat in pacific waters I'll give it a try. Too far to sail the Mac from California. No desire to overland through adversity like roadblocks, checks, stops, by military and varied police. Takes the joy out. It's remains possible I'll still give Mexico a go via the water from Brownsville TX.........

Macgregor & Endeavour 26S and 37 Utah's Canyon Country
Here's the most excitement/danger I've ever experienced in my (admittedly) brief time in MX.
The anti-narco trafficking operations began early, on day 5 of this trip. Enjoy.

Nice write-up of the trip. Enjoyed it,

Going down the penisula from Ensenada there was one checkpoint on my bus ride. Was no different than going through the border patrol checkpoints in the San Diego area. Crossing the border going south was always easy in my experience (bounced across once every other month for my time in Ensenada). The inconvenience is in crossing the northbound direction. Long lines, grumpy guards etc. Be a stickler on traffic laws and watch for speed traps (slower speed in a short section of road etc). It's better than it was 20 or 30 years ago, but sometimes out in the rural areas you'll run into that Dukes of Hazzard cop (Rosco Pico Coletrain) with a need for bribes (bribes are still less than a ticket in California).

Had some interesting experiences in regards to language (I have a basic understanding of spanish from growing up in So Cal and working in restaurants as a teenager):
  • Was less of an issue in La Paz than in Ensenada (struck me as funny)
  • When ordering at a fast food restaurant I'd be hacking it in spanish and the teenage girl behind the counter would answer in english for the practice
  • My DSLR got damaged on my La Paz trip. Went to the local Sears store to purchase a new one. The sales guy and I went over to the computer section and used Google Translate to type messages back and forth so I could get the details of the package I was purchasing.
  • Carry a cheap calculator. When spoken I have a hard time translating numbers (just too fast for my ear) so would hand them the calculator and they would type the number of pesos wanted into the display. Easy peasy.

This has happened to me once, in the town of Sonoyta.
When the officer told me the fine would be 1000 pesos (about $80.00) at the department headquarters, but only $40.00 "here and now", I knew what was up.
I told him I would "gladly pay the 1000 at HQ, please lead the way". Immediately, his here and now price halved, then halved again after sticking to my statement.
Finally, he smiled and gave up, we shook hands and went our separate ways.
