I recently purchased a 1988 Catalina. It has two large scupper holes in the cockpit, but does not have any covers on them to prevent inadvertent loss of dropped objects. Are there any off-the-shelf mesh covers that would fit these scupper holes?

West Marin

West Marine sells a few made by Attwood (West Marine item # 410177). The sizes are limited so I don't know if you'll be able to find something that will work. I don't know how big you are talking about but the danger of installing strainers is that they may clog and allow your cockpit to fill. Maybe not a problem if you are aboard to keep them clear but a couple of good cloud bursts at the dock unattended might be enough to lower the stern to the exhust and bilge pump exits. Yours is to do the risk analysis between that and loosing something small enough to go down the drain. Tim

Watch out for leaves

I get fallen leaves where I dock my C-30. A mesh would clog up quickly. I just stuff a rag in when I'm working with small items in th cock-pit.
