Having been a member of Sea Scouts B.S.A. for quite some time, I am familiar with the use of worn and sometimes broken parts; replacing the plug isn't a must in terms of immediate action. However, as said by other repliers, the black marks around the prongs indicate a circuitry issue, and if you continue to use any plug, old or new, then the problem has a higher likelihood to worsen. I would check your fuses and wiring to the battery. I hope this helps!
