I was not in the military, I was in the Air Force :)
OMG I am still laughing as I type this.

Another Navy Jody call...

"I don't know but I've been told, Navy wings (aviator pin) are made of Gold! I don't but its been said, Air Force wings (pilot pin) are made of Lead! Sound off 1,2... 3,4!"
Jim...

did you happen to be at Polk in June and July of 1966 and if so what was your company mine was Bravo-4-1 south fort
I was there over the July fourth holiday. (Training had not yet started) I helped set up a booth at the USO and we won first place for best booth. It was "pick your state" It was a map of the US with nails from the back and sponge rubber balls to throw. It got me weekend passes during basic.
I finally found the company it was B-4. I did not remember and my file does not indicate which platoon. Looks like we were in the same training outfit. If I remember correctly that is where I was the barracks Sargent.

Those names do not ring any bells in my old tired head. I was trying to remember the Sargents name that stored a model sail boat I was building. But it escapes me. It got destroyed during shipment from there.

Had a low draft number in the first draft 12/1/69 so enlisted for Army OCS. Basic at Ft Leonard Wood, AIT at Tigerland at Ft Polk La (butthole of the US). Through a bunch of lucky accidents ended up in Germany in "Special Weapons". After discharge I was reactivated and ended up at the Records Center in St Louis for another year and a half. Was on the discharge review board for the reserves discharging doctors who found Jesus after the Army paid for medical school and just couldn't go on active duty.

Delayed entry spring of 74 USCG, Boot camp Cape May NJ left as E-2, deck ape USCGC Hollyhock Miami. Slotted HM school New London CT, assigned to USCGC Blackthorn at Mobile transferring to Galveston as independent duty corpsman. Completed enlistment of 4yrs 6 mo at Cape San Blas Fl about a year before the sinking of the Blackthorn. I drive by the memorial and often stop to read the names I so well remember, perhaps it is fitting to place the coin atop.

SailM8. Second that on Tiger Land. USAR 6-1-69 through 6-1-75. Fort Polk Basic 10-1-69, Fort Polk AIT 1-170. 11Bravo because they didn't have any slots for more combat engineers at Fort Leonard Wood. 6mos of penance for getting into the Reserves I guess. My lottery number was 100, fortunately I was already in. Basic was interesting being one of 30 northern reservists in a company of a 160, mostly pissed off draftees from La, Alabama, and Mississippi. Yikes!

Cold War sailor (78-88) mostly in the Med providing direct support.
Did two Freedom of the Seas trips in the Black Sea and one off Libya shortly after Berlin bombing.
Some great memories and as the Irish blessing goes some "interesting times". Still, would not change them.

Draft #2, How lucky is that? Deferred through my undergraduate degree (stupid me graduated before I turned 20) but was from a modest income (poor) family and ran out of money to defer any longer (even though I was working full time). My family didn't know anyone so could not get into the reserves or the guard. Was 1 of the 4 the USCG excepted in July of '71 from Alabama, spent a cold summer/fall in the estuary between Alameda and Oakland. Wanted to go anywhere but back to the south but as luck would have it, AE school Navy JAX, then straight to flight school in Pensacola area, Running short on enlistment time for flight training, so extended for a year. (What was I thinking) . Wanted to go anywhere but Mobile AVTRACEN but you guessed it. The airplanes I flew were older than me. Due to USCG money problems (not part of big budget Homeland Security then) got away early at 4 years 5 months and 2 hours on the clock. I remember the day, just like in my dreams, "It was a cloudy morning as I was heading out to the front gate. I stopped to give the renta cop my pass and then, and then, yes, yes, the sun broke though the clouds an shown down upon me. I was at my new engineering job by lunch where I was 4 years and 5 months behind all these punk ass kids. If I would have had money and got those deferments, I might be running for president right now. Would I do it again? Well I'm a realist and that is a dumb question, the past is the past and you can't change it. You observe it, learn from it, keep your head up, and move on. Bad times fade, good times remain in your memory. How lucky is that!

Sorry for the long post but I have a ton of projects and I wanted to procrastinate a while longer.
