Draft #2, How lucky is that? Deferred through my undergraduate degree (stupid me graduated before I turned 20) but was from a modest income (poor) family and ran out of money to defer any longer (even though I was working full time). My family didn't know anyone so could not get into the reserves or the guard. Was 1 of the 4 the USCG excepted in July of '71 from Alabama, spent a cold summer/fall in the estuary between Alameda and Oakland. Wanted to go anywhere but back to the south but as luck would have it, AE school Navy JAX, then straight to flight school in Pensacola area, Running short on enlistment time for flight training, so extended for a year. (What was I thinking) . Wanted to go anywhere but Mobile AVTRACEN but you guessed it. The airplanes I flew were older than me. Due to USCG money problems (not part of big budget Homeland Security then) got away early at 4 years 5 months and 2 hours on the clock. I remember the day, just like in my dreams, "It was a cloudy morning as I was heading out to the front gate. I stopped to give the renta cop my pass and then, and then, yes, yes, the sun broke though the clouds an shown down upon me. I was at my new engineering job by lunch where I was 4 years and 5 months behind all these punk ass kids. If I would have had money and got those deferments, I might be running for president right now. Would I do it again? Well I'm a realist and that is a dumb question, the past is the past and you can't change it. You observe it, learn from it, keep your head up, and move on. Bad times fade, good times remain in your memory. How lucky is that!
Sorry for the long post but I have a ton of projects and I wanted to procrastinate a while longer.
